Wednesday Hodgepodge - Thinking Back

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1. What's your earliest memory?

The earliest memory that is more than just a general impression is from when I was about four years old. It was summer and my aunts were visiting us. My dad had set up our little backyard kiddie pool so I could slide into it (and my dad slid in too! So fun!) and the whole family was out there enjoying it. That part of the memory is so joyful! Then my aunts took my baby brother who was just toddling into the house to change his clothes, and they thought it would be funny to bring him out wearing one of my dresses that I'd outgrown recently. Maybe everyone else thought it was funny, but I was very upset and felt quite betrayed for some reason. So that was the negative part of the memory.

2. What's something about you today that the old you would find surprising?

Probably quite a few things! I'm calling me in my early 20s the "old me" to answer this. I never would have guessed I'd live in Ohio. I wouldn't even have guessed that I'd live in Maryland or New Jersey, which also happened. I wouldn't have guessed that I'd be capable of driving in a big city or on interstate highways. I wouldn't have guessed that I'd enjoy cooking even a little bit. I think 20-something me would be surprised and disappointed that 50-something me still hasn't learned to love vegetables the way a mature person should, still hasn't shed the weight gained my 40s, and still hasn't properly learned to play guitar.

3. Do you like to fish? Are you a fish eater? Favorite fish (to eat)? Favorite way to prepare fish?

I have never gone fishing and have zero interest in trying it. Not for me. I don't even really want to be around while other people are fishing.

I do eat some fish - not catfish, and not any seafood other than fish, and I won't eat fish with head or tail or fins still included. My favorite fish to eat . . . toss-up between English or Irish pub-style beer battered fish & chips (halibut, haddock, cod are best) and fried Lake Erie perch. Mmmmm. Fish & chips is very often my order when we eat out, and I'm always on the lookout for restaurants that do outstanding pub-style fish. Lake Erie perch is obviously a treat for when we visit to that area, so it's more special since I can't get it just anywhere.

I like to do cod or halibut just baked topped with a simple breadcrumb and cheese. Very easy and tasty. I also like grilled salmon but that takes some planning so I can get it marinated. And salmon costs more! I'm not good at making my own beer batter fried fish yet, but I've done it, and it would be a useful skill since that's my favorite!

4. What's your biggest first world problem?

I don't have enough room for all my stuff. I don't have time to read all my books. I have trouble deciding which restaurant I want to go to. The drive through lane at my local Starbucks is so terribly slow.

I could go on, but I think I've made my point to myself.

5. What one word would you use to describe your year thus far?

Adjustments.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I had oral surgery yesterday to extract a broken tooth, but my understanding is they weren't able to do the bone graft at the same time, so I guess that happens later? I don't know any details about that yet, but will find out at the follow-up appointment next week. My diet is going to be limited to soft or easy to chew foods for awhile so that could be a challenge in some ways. On the plus side, the pain has been minimal and no swelling, so I am going back to work today, although I am going to avoid talking as much as I can because it feels really weird.

The Book of Face has been advertising this to me lately. I'm thinking stocking stuffers for all my kids. What do you think?

What are your answers to some of these hodgepodge questions? Leave a comment and let me know!

  2. Ha! I love the air freshener! I think my sons-in-laws each need one. I have a similar list of first world problems. I am not a complainer in general but my goodness, the things we complain about are just so trivial when we look at the world at large. Hope you have a great rest of the week!
