Is it simple? I don't know?! I guess it's simple in that there's not a whole lot to it. I go to work (which is a new thing starting this week), I putter around the house doing the same chores, we go to church a couple times a week, and I go to chorus. Rinse and repeat. On the weekends we usually get together with our son and his family so that adds some interest, but mostly it's a very simple weekly routine that often feels a bit pointless.
And yet, trying to sort out all my feelings about all of it is quite complicated. Sundays are the best days of the week, but also the worst. I'm at peace with being here, but also I hate that it has to be this way. When it comes to my emotional life, nothing is simple at all.
Being able to go for walks. Walking at a park, down to the mailbox, around a shopping district or downtown, or on a slightly more challenging hike. I should be doing it more! It's been just over a year since my knee replacement and I'm still amazed at what a difference it makes to be able to walk without pain.
I've never been on a cruise, but it's on my wishlist so I'd choose that. I'd far rather walk―I do not like riding a bike at all. I'd choose swimming as an activity, even though I'm not any good at it. But the couple times I tried downhill skiing, I hated it. I'd like to try cross-country skiing though. And I would choose the mountains as a destination! Nothing against the ocean, because I love that too, but the mountains are more appealing to me.
Hmmm. I bought a couple pairs of jeans that I think I will love. I did love that I could get them as "try before you buy" from Amazon to make sure they were a good fit. I had to buy a specific style and color for the chorus performance costume so I was nervous about whether I'd like them, but they were really comfortable when I tried them on.
Oh, I know! I bought my daughter's grad portraits online and I loved that!
I do like to tell stories about what we did for fun and what we got away with as kids, and to compare aspects of it to my kids' experiences. So we tell short stories about how we didn't have GPS or cell phones, so we had to find our way using a paper map and that's all. We couldn't text our parents to explain why we were late coming home, and my mom couldn't call me or even check on me if I decided to do something other than what I'd told her. Back in my day, when we went on a road trip, we had to use the AAA guidebook to find a hotel and we had to either PHONE and make reservations or just show up and see if they had a room available. And we were navigating using the impossible-to-fold paper maps, or the AAA Trip-tik that we had to order at least a week in advance.
Back in my day, there was no internet and no Word or Google Documents. We had to go to a library and search the card catalogs and encyclopedias to research our school papers. And we either wrote them by hand, or typed them on a manual typewriter. Typing was an actual class in high school―can you imagine?!
However did we manage? Kids these days don't know how good they've got it!
I'm really scrambling, trying to get used to a weekly routine that includes me going to work every day! We're planning to get a second car, and I hope we can find one soon, because it will be a lot easier when I don't have to drive my husband to work so I can have the car to get to work, and I found out yesterday that I especially hate driving straight from my job to his at the end of the day―it's a horrific drive! I'll also have to figure out when to do all the other things (like blogging?) that I want to do and how to manage my days.
But she did not, in fact, have time. |
Is your life simple? What simple pleasures are you enjoying these days? Leave a comment and let me know!
Whoa! Sounds like you are in the middle of a lot of adjustments! Hope it all smooths out soon and you can get that second car. I was smiling and nodding my head at all your 'back in the day' memories. I still love paper maps! :)
ReplyDeleteYeah, my head is spinning a little bit these days! I still love paper maps, but I totally rely on GPS to get me where I'm going. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
DeleteMy back in the day stories are very similar!
ReplyDeleteI'm planning to stop by later to read Back in the Day stories! Thanks for commenting!
DeleteThese were good questions this week and I enjoyed reading your answers. I hope you can find a 2nd vehicle soon. Hope you have a great day!
ReplyDeleteThank you - a second vehicle will simplify my life, for sure! Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteI guess I don't know your story but I do think each season of life presents challenges and adjustments so give yourself grace. I have found retirement to be wonderful and complicated both. Also, as we age we have time to contemplate what we've done and are doing a bit more than when we were in the thick of child rearing, and there are days I'm all over the place too, so you're not alone. Good luck finding the car, and I'm sure you'll be into a new routine with work very soon. Take care.
ReplyDeletewell, I'm trying to take the good along with the not-so-good and to find the blessings even though some things are not what I would have chosen for myself. Thank you so much for such an encouraging comment!
Deletei love your hodgepodge, Kym! the simple stuff made me smile.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by and commenting! Glad I could help you smile.
DeleteA lot your "back in my day" stories sound like my own! I had an electric typewriter though and I loved that thing. I remember taking typing classes in high school; though we were learning our typing skills on an actual computer keyboard by then with simple and basic word/ typing programs.
ReplyDeleteI loved the old manual and electric typewriters, although it's SO much easier to correct mistakes in a word program! In high school I considered the typing class a super easy credit. ;-) Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
DeleteI liked your answers...I hope you get a good routine figured out and find a car that works for you. I would agree, that would be very difficult to go from one job to another.
ReplyDeleteI drove from my work to my husband's today and took a different route that was not as stressful, but I still hope we find another car soon so I don't have to do that! We may go car shopping this weekend - fingers crossed! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
