There are some who believe that we are better off to obey our impulses and do what we feel like, or, as the saying goes, to "follow our heart". But if we only did what we felt like doing, when we felt like doing it, what would we accomplish? Would boring or tedious tasks ever get done? Would difficult or daunting circumstances ever be faced with resolve and courage?

The most dangerous thing you can do is to take any one impulse of your own nature and set it up as the thing you ought to follow at all costs. ~C.S. Lewis

Spontaneity can be a beautiful thing, but it can also get us into trouble.

Impulsive actions led to trouble and trouble could have unpleasant consequences. ~Steig Larsson

I have owned quite a number of things that were impulse purchases, and few of them were worth it. I have said and done foolish and hurtful things because I reacted on my first impulse instead of taking a moment to calm myself and choose a reasonable response.

There is perhaps no psychological skill more fundamental than resisting impulse. ~Daniel Goleman

Impulsiveness can be charming but deliberation can have an appeal, as well. ~Sarah Dessen

Being spontaneous and impulsive can bring joy and excitement to our lives, but are more likely to do so when we've disciplined ourselves to choose actions that are right, kind, courageous, and generous. Learning to discern our own motives and wanting to do what God wants us to do will help us decide which impulses are selfish and which ones are the nudges of the Holy Spirit.

Free will is not the liberty to do whatever one likes, but the power of doing whatever one sees ought to be done, even in the very face of otherwise overwhelming impulse. There lies freedom, indeed. ~George MacDonald

Do not be hasty to speak, and do not be impulsive to make a speech before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few.
~Ecclesiastes 5:2~

Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
~Galatians 5:25~

If you get an impulse in a scene, no matter how wrong it seems, follow the impulse. It might be something and if it ain't - take two! ~Jack Nicholson

You can't negotiate with a zombie. They have only one impulse - that's to eat us or our brains. ~Stephen Graham Jones

  1. She was an impulse purchase,
    my dear and lovely wife,
and though we've been through curses,
she's the best thing in my life.
    We met upon the Internet,
    and due to my injury,
she chose to go and place a bet,
    and came to visit me.
I thought she'd like to see my church
    first thing, if so disposed,
and as Christ looked from altar-perch,
I took a knee and there proposed.
She said, "This I would not have guessed,
but a thousand times and more, oh, yes!"

  3. I am not given to being impulsive as I tend to think things through, probably to a fault. But ... there have surely been many a time when I have spoken impulsively and regretted it immediately. May we learn to discern our impulses so that all we do is influenced by His Spirit. Blessings!
