Wednesday Hodgepodge - Sweet Thoughts and Memories

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1. What does productivity look like to you?

Just getting things done efficiently, focusing on the task at hand. I guess that's why I have trouble being productive at home. There are too many things that could distract me or divide my attention, and I don't have clear deadlines. I definitely CAN be productive, but I need some motivating reason to concentrate on it.

2. What was your fondest (or one of your fondest) memory of High School?

The good times spent with friends. I had a wonderful close-knit friend group and we spent a lot of time together. LOTS of time! And not much of it was spent studying either. I also went on an exchange trip to Nova Scotia while in high school and that was a real highlight.

3. What did you do the summer after High School?

I really don't know! I'm pretty sure I went to our church camp a couple times that summer and probably went on a family vacation. I think I started working full time at some point during that summer and clearly I spent any available free time I had hanging out with my friends. I took a gap year so I didn't have any timeline to prepare for college at that point.

4. June 14th is National Strawberry Shortcake Day . . . are you a fan, and if so will you celebrate? How do you make yours? Have you been strawberry picking? If so what do you do with all those berries?

I like strawberry shortcake but it's not a huge favorite of mine. I don't have any strawberries on hand so I guess I'm not celebrating or making any shortcake today. I've only made it once or twice in my life.

I've been strawberry picking a few times and I'm not really a fan. It's hot, you have to be all bent over, and there's bugs. I'm just not passionate enough about strawberries to find that a worthwhile use of my time.

My daughter is still a fan of the Strawberry Shortcake character and show though!

5. What's something you always splurge on?

Hmmm. Depends on how I'm defining 'splurge'. When we eat out, I think we tend to splurge because we order what we want to eat without much thought to the prices. I will also splurge on books from time to time. And other little splurges here and there. When we visit Canada, I always splurge on a few favorite Canadian food items―Coffee Crisp, butter tarts, Canadian Oreos, Fudgee-Os, Shreddies cereal, and creamed honey.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Answering that first question made me think about how my productivity has been rather spotty lately. I had been trying to establish a more structured routine to my days so I could actually be productive, but I let it slide a bit. This past weekend I didn't care much about being efficient or productive though, because our daughter and her boyfriend were here for a visit, and the priority was to spend time with them. We splurged on eating out and on books! And even got to play a bit of Scrabble, since they both enjoy it, and I don't have anyone to play with other than the kids.

I had no place to play this word!

  1. We tend to splurge on our vacations and dining out; not that we eat out very often.

    1. we try to keep our dining out to once a week or less, but we've been much more willing to spend money on it with just two of us on the check these days! ;-) Thanks for stopping by!

  2. How are Canadian Oreos different from the ones made in the U.S.?

    1. so Canadian Oreos have a little bit different texture to the cookie part - it's a little crisper. And they use confectioners sugar in the frosting, so it's creamier. Thanks for stopping by and asking the important questions!

  3. Nova Scotia had to be interesting place to visit. I forgot about books. I have a Kindle but there is just something special about holding and reading a book!

    1. Yes, as much as I love the options I have on my Kindle, I will never be able to give up real books. Thanks for stopping by!

  4. I really enjoyed your answers - and I learned something about Canadian Oreos. I wonder why they have 2 different yet similar versions of the Oreo cookie? Interesting.

    1. I'm really not sure either! We used to think we were just imagining the difference, but we've taste tested them side by side and compared the ingredient labels. It's a delicious mystery. :-D Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  5. Nova Scotia would be an interesting place to visit. I should have said that these days I feel productive if I manage to make dinner! It's been ages since I've played Scrabble. I need to break out the board. So are Canadian Oreos different from regular oreos? Happy week to you.

    1. Yes, making a "real" dinner helps me feel productive too! Or trying a new recipe that turns out well. Yes, Canadian Oreos have a different texture and taste and the concensus is that they are definitely better! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  7. My husband watched something online about how many bugs are in strawberries. Apparently more than in almost any other fruit. Ick. After watching he said he wasn't sure he could still eat them lol. The producers of the program recommended washing berries in a mixture of water and baking soda, then rinsing and I've been doing that. You don't taste the soda.

    1. Yes the thought of having bugs in my food turns me off. I found an ant in a bowl of fresh raspberries and cream once and it put me off raspberries - which are my favorite! - for YEARS. The baking soda trick sounds like a good one to use, so I'll keep that in mind! Thanks for stopping by and giving good advice!

  8. I often wish my HS friends still lived close enough to visit on a regular basis because I have found finding close adult friends to be a bit difficult. I remember collecting Strawberry Shortcake stuff when I was younger..I've shown my grandkids the newest cartoons. They're still cute. I love scrabble. My hubby and I used to play it a lot when we were first married. Not so much now.

    1. I really wish I lived close enough to a HS friend or two! We moved away from my hometown almost 30 years ago, and after our more recent move about 6 months ago I've found it so difficult to make new friends! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
