One word. Five minutes to write about it. This is the idea behind Five Minute Friday and this is today's free-writing post.
aspire to greatness
aspire to be better

I don't know if it's worth it to 'aspire to greatness'. It sounds ambitious and lofty, but most of us are not going to be the richest or most famous or an undefeated champion. Which isn't to say that goals and ambition and drive aren't good. I think maybe it's better to be more specific about the arena for the greatness we want to achieve. I want to be the best I can be, and can aspire to be better every day.
All the aspiring in the world doesn't help if I don't put in the hard work to achieve the goal, so I need to define the goal and what I need to do to get there.
And maybe the most important thing is knowing what I'm aspiring to, and making sure it's a worthy goal. Not a selfish or self-serving ambition, but a devoted pursuit of an ambition to be more like Jesus and live out his calling on my life.
There is nothing wrong with dedication and goals, but if you focus on yourself, all the lights fade away and you become a fleeting moment in life. ~Pete Maravich
Thankfully, I found some excellent guidelines in the Scriptures.
. . . aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we instructed you . . .
~I Thessalonians 4:11~
That shouldn't be hard, right? We can all start there!
No matter what race or color you are, you can aspire to do something great. ~Laurie Hernandez
Here's the kind of greatness we should all aspire to:
My goal is to know him [Christ] and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of his sufferings, being confromed to his death, assuming that I will somehow reach the resurrection from among the dead.
Not that I have already reached the goal or am already perfect, but I make every effort to take hold of it because I also have been taken hold of by Christ Jesus. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and reaching forward to what is ahead, I pursue as my goal the prize promised by God's heavenly call in Christ Jesus.
~Philippians 3:10-14~

As a man you just think, oh no, can I grow a beard, can I do this, and a mutton chop is a really niche aspiration, but yeah, I got there. ~Jonathan Bailey
Congratulations, Mr. Bailey, whoever you are!

I know this may sound prideful,
ReplyDeleteput your head into a cramp,
but I ain't in denial;
I'm the undefeated champ.
I made it through hard yesterday,
tomorrow will be worse,
but right now I'm here to say
that pain has an obverse,
a crucible's refining fire,
the trial that makes the man,
and in swimming through hell's gyre
I've gone and made a plan
to profit from these days of strife,
sell movie rights, yeah, to my life.
More than fair to declare yourself the champion at the end of each day! And I bet the movie would be very interesting! Thanks for stopping by and commenting
