Whenever it's time to do a major cleanout of a cupboard or a junk drawer - and recently, when we were cleaning out whole rooms to move - I find broken things I kept with some idea that I could either fix them or make something else out of them. High hopes, but seldom did I have a workable plan to make it happen. Chances are, if I didn't mend the broken item immediately, it didn't get done. I thought I would get to it someday, but forgot. I needed a part or a tool that I didn't have handy, and I kept forgetting to look for it. I didn't have time at the moment, or I needed someone's help, or maybe I wanted to search the internet for a tutorial, but . . . you know the drill. I forgot.
The broken thing went into a drawer or a cupboard, shoved to the back. It was replaced or not greatly missed. And the broken toy sat there on my dresser. Things got piled on top of it and it was forgotten, the child that owned it grew up.
Pretty depressing, huh? I don't have a super track record when it comes to fixing things. I'll do the things that are easy to fix, and I'll make the effort to look after fixing something that I can't afford to be without or to replace. But in today's world, we often find it easier and not very costly to just get something new.
That's not a big deal when it comes to broken stuff, but what about broken people? People can't be replaced and shouldn't be shoved aside and forgotten. Hearts and lives aren't easily mended, and we don't have the tools or know-how to do it.
Thankfully, God is in the mending hearts business. We can take all our broken bits and pieces, shattered dreams and relationships, and torn-up trust, and give it to him. He knows how to make our lives beautiful and useful again, and he never forgets about us.
LORD, I have taken refuge;
let me never be put to shame;
deliver me in your righteousness.
Turn your ear to me, come quickly to my rescue;
be my rock of refuge, a strong fortress to save me.
I will be glad and rejoice in your love,
for you saw my affliction and knew the anguish of my soul.
Be merciful to me, LORD, for I am in distress;
my eyes grow weak with sorrow, my soul and body with grief.
I am forgotten as though I were dead;
I have become like broken pottery.
My times are in your hands;
deliver me from the hands of my enemies, from those who pursue me.
Let your face shine on your servant;
save me in your unfailing love.
How abundant are the good things
that you have stored up for those who fear you,
that you bestow in the sight of all,
on those who take refuge in you.
Be strong and take heart,
all you who hope in the LORD.
~from Psalm 31~

I have become like broken pottery ... but how wonderful we can go to the Potter and He will mend the broken places! Love this, Kym!
ReplyDeleteThis is something that impresses me about my artist daughter. She is constantly taking broken things and incorporporating them into her art. I ask her before I throw away broken items. Something that is broken can inspire a whole art project with her. Thank you for sharing this beautiful song, I am going to add it to my playlist. I hope that you have a lovely day!
ReplyDeleteWe do live in a throwaway generation, sadly. Glad that God doesn't dispense with us similarly!
