Wednesday Hodgepodge - Gearing Up For the Games!
I do plan on watching some of the Olympics, but I'm not sure when and how yet. We're going to visit the kids in Maryland on the weekend, so I kind of expect we'll watch the Opening Ceremonies at the very least. I like gymnastics and diving and a few other events so we'll see what we can get given our choice of streaming services.
I have watched Olympic hockey games in person, and saw part of the Opening Ceremonies in person (I was in the choir at the Calgary games) but that was the Winter Games. If I could choose a Summer Games event, I think I'd most enjoy gymnastics.
I have been to Paris, Ontario, but not to Paris, France. It's not one of the first places I'd choose to visit, but I really would like to see it. Thinking of a favorite 'French thing' is hard. Maybe French music and art? Some composers and artists I especially like are French - Claude Debussy, Gabriel Faure, Maurice Ravel, Pierre-August Renoir, Paul Cezanne, Henri Matisse . . .
Oh I love them ALL!! If I had to pick just one, I would say mille feuille. It's been a long time since I've had one.
I have around sixty cousins. One on my mom's side of the family, and all the rest obviously on my dad's side of the family. I was a college student when the cousin on my mom's side was born, but since she's the only cousin, I guess you could say we had a somewhat close relationship even despite the age difference. There were two families of cousins around my age on my dad's side that we got together with a lot when we were kids and we were pretty close. Whenever we'd get together with cousins we all had a great time together, but it just didn't happen that often. Since I moved to the USA, I hardly ever see my cousins so I'm not close with any of them any more, and it's a safe bet I won't see any of them today!
The last time I remember attending something that was super crowded was when I helped out at the Race for the Cure in downtown Columbus a couple months ago.
I mentioned that we attended events and I was a small part of the Winter Games in Calgary in 1988. Ten years ago I wrote about My Favorite Winter Olympic Games for my homeschool blog, if you want to know details.
Will you be watching the Olympics? What are your favorite events? Leave a comment and let me know!

Twenty-Six Lists - Be A Good Sport
- Hockey! I've been watching hockey for pretty much as long as I can remember. Like going back to when I was a little kid watching Hockey Night In Canada with my dad every Saturday night. I remember when the Flames moved from Atlanta to Calgary, and instantly became a Flames fan, and have been ever since. Even though it's been a challenge for me to keep up with the team since I live so far away, and I admit that I'd be hard-pressed to name more than a couple current players! Another favorite team of mine has been the St Louis Blues, for no particular reason. I was an avid Washington Capitals fan when we lived in Maryland, and now that I live in Columbus I'm finding myself becoming a Blue Jackets fan. My hubby's favorite team is the Montreal Canadiens, and that's how we chose our daughter's name, Kennady Anne. True story. Say it with a French accent, and you'll understand.
- Baseball. I watched a lot of baseball and softball games when my kids played in community leagues. I enjoy going to MLB and minor league games, but I rarely watch baseball games on TV or listen on the radio. We'll watch the playoffs and World Series if teams we like are in it. My favorite team is the Toronto Blue Jays.
- I used to pay attention to football, but only the Canadian Football League. I still check out the scores and standings when I think about it, to see how my Calgary Stampeders are doing, but only make a point of trying to watch during the Grey Cup. I do not follow the NFL or college football at all, and the only NFL game I watch each year is the Superbowl. Sometimes I don't even figure out which teams are in the Superbowl until the week before!
- The Olympics! I'm more interested in the Winter Games, and the favorite event is hockey, but most years I've watched a lot of events. I always watch the figure skating; and skiing, bobsled, and curling are the others I'm most likely to watch. I spend less time watching the Summer Games, but I really enjoy watching gymnastics, swimming, diving, rowing, and some of the track events. The Opening and Closing ceremonies are always a highlight as well. By the way, in 1988 we still lived in Calgary when they hosted the Winter Games, and attended some Olympic hockey games! AND I was in the chor that sang in the Opening Ceremonies too!

Wednesday Hodgepodge - Peaches & Ice Cream
How hard it is to make new friends once you're an empty nester.
And this one goes back a few years for me, and is a little more specific . . . As a homeschooling mom, I was not at all prepared for how gigantic the adjustment for ME would be after my youngest graduated. It's like retiring from a long career, but there's no benefit package or recognition gifts. No party. Well, there is a party, but it's for your student, and rightfully so. But as a homeschool mom, you're out of a job, and if your social circle is largely the homeschool community, that all changes too.
My house? Maybe my bed. Or my books. That's harder to answer than I expected!
That's a very specific celebration! I will likely eat some ice cream, but it won't be peach ice cream, so I suppose I won't be celebrating. I like peaches, but they are not my favorite. I like a lot of foods made WITH peaches more than just a plain peach. So of those choices, I'd take the peach cobbler. I can't think of anything I own that is peach colored unless it's underwear or soap or something. Haha.
Trust and loyalty. In a good friendship, you can be honest with each other and you can be sure that confidences are kept and that you'd have each other's backs if necessary.
Ice cream. I do NOT like snowcones or even slushee type drinks.
Amusement park or camping . . . tough choice. I guess amusement park. I like camping but my husband doesn't, and it can be a lot of work.
Burger or hot dog . . . both?! If I have to choose just one, I'll have a burger.
Watermelon.
Sleep late. I don't get to do it often, so it's a treat and feels so luxurious!
Sunset, because I prefer to sleep late!
I feel like no one has been talking about the Olympics at all, or at least I am sadly out of the loop when it comes to the Summer Olympics this time around. I'm not even sure when and where the games are. I guess I just haven't been paying attention!
What adult problem were you unprepared for? Leave a comment and let me know!
