Wednesday Hodgepodge - Gearing Up For the Games!

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1.  The Olympics kick off this coming weekend. Will you be watching? If you could watch just one event in person, which one would you choose?

I do plan on watching some of the Olympics, but I'm not sure when and how yet. We're going to visit the kids in Maryland on the weekend, so I kind of expect we'll watch the Opening Ceremonies at the very least. I like gymnastics and diving and a few other events so we'll see what we can get given our choice of streaming services.

I have watched Olympic hockey games in person, and saw part of the Opening Ceremonies in person (I was in the choir at the Calgary games) but that was the Winter Games. If I could choose a Summer Games event, I think I'd most enjoy gymnastics.

2. Have you ever been to Paris? Is this a city you'd like to visit? What's your favorite 'French thing'?

I have been to Paris, Ontario, but not to Paris, France. It's not one of the first places I'd choose to visit, but I really would like to see it. Thinking of a favorite 'French thing' is hard. Maybe French music and art? Some composers and artists I especially like are French - Claude Debussy, Gabriel Faure, Maurice Ravel,  Pierre-August Renoir, Paul Cezanne, Henri Matisse . . .

3. Macaron, creme brulee, chocolate soufle, mille feuille, or an eclair . . . your favorite French patisserie from the ones listed?

Oh I love them ALL!! If I had to pick just one, I would say mille feuille. It's been a long time since I've had one.

4. July 24th is National Cousins Day . . . do you have many cousins? Are you close to them? Will you see any of your cousins on July 24th?

I have around sixty cousins. One on my mom's side of the family, and all the rest obviously on my dad's side of the family. I was a college student when the cousin on my mom's side was born, but since she's the only cousin, I guess you could say we had a somewhat close relationship even despite the age difference. There were two families of cousins around my age on my dad's side that we got together with a lot when we were kids and we were pretty close. Whenever we'd get together with cousins we all had a great time together, but it just didn't happen that often. Since I moved to the USA, I hardly ever see my cousins so I'm not close with any of them any more, and it's a safe bet I won't see any of them today!

5.  Last time you went somewhere that felt like 'everyone and his cousin' was there?

The last time I remember attending something that was super crowded was when I helped out at the Race for the Cure in downtown Columbus a couple months ago.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I mentioned that we attended events and I was a small part of the Winter Games in Calgary in 1988. Ten years ago I wrote about My Favorite Winter Olympic Games for my homeschool blog, if you want to know details.

Will you be watching the Olympics? What are your favorite events? Leave a comment and let me know!

  2. Wow that is a lot of cousins! I have 4; 2 on my mom's side and 2 on my dad's but none of us are close. How fun to have gotten to attend part of the opening ceremonies! The closest I've ever come to the Olympics is watching the trials and the practices at Lake Placid over the summer the year they were hosting the Olympics. I like the synchronized swimming, gymnastics, and the diving.

    1. Visiting Lake Placid during training would have been very interesting! I forgot about synchronized swimming - I find that interesting too, it's one of those sports that make me wonder how they ever thought of it. LOL Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  3. I never watch the Olympic games, sport just doesn't interest me.
You won't loose anything if you go to Paris, it's a dirty, neglected town with a rusty Eiffel tower. It still has the reputation from the last centuries. I was there several times for exhibition and art, that is very interesting and worthwhile but the city .....

    1. Well, I won't fret about not being able to visit Paris then! Although I suppose many big cities are like that - nice spots for tourists but dirty and neglected in other places. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  4. It's so interesting how many places are named Paris...apparently there's one in Texas too..haha.

    1. I haven't been to Paris, TX either. I'm pretty sure I've seen signs for Paris in other states too. LOL Thanks for stopping by!

  5. How special for you to be a part of the winter games! I watch the Olympics and looking forward to seeing the opening ceremony. Yes, lots of artist from France. When I worked for the postal service, I was involved with several Race for the Cure events. I plan to watch gymnastics, swimming, volleyball and the finals of the team sports.

  6. I am not really into the Olympics though there are some sports I do like. I will probably watch some swimming (I understand that) and gymnastics. Other than that, I probably won't watch much more. I prefer the winter Olympics as I love figure skating of any kind! I so want to go to Paris. Once upon a time, I thought I would make it there, but my husband's health is not what it used to be so probably not. French pastries...oui, s'il vous plaît!

  7. I love Clair de Lune. I hope to at least see Simone Biles perform. How cool that you got to sing in the choir at the Olympics! Hope you have a great weekend with family

  8. I won't be watching the olympics as I'm not into sports. I'm sure I'll be hearing about all the highlights though, I've already read all the controversy over the opening night ceremony.

    1. I've heard all about the controversial act at the opening ceremony and I'm disgusted by it. How disappointing. We'll be watching highlights of the sporting events though. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  9. That is so cool about the winter Olympics that you were a part of! I am appalled about what I have heard so far about the Paris Olympics. Not terribly shocking but disappointing, still. You have so many cousins- it´s a shame you don´t live near them but I think that is pretty common. I have never lived near mine. Hope your weekend is going well!
