Wednesday Hodgepodge - A Perfect Summer Day

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1.  The midpoint of summer (believe it or not) is August 7th. Describe a perfect summer day. Have you had one this year?

It feels like summer is almost over once we get into August, doesn't it? Our granddaughter will be going back to school next week, after all. Anyway . . . a perfect summer day is blue sky sunny and warm but not too hot. I'd say anywhere between 80ºF and 90ºF. There's a pleasant breeze to keep the air moving so it's not muggy. Now that we have perfect weather, the perfect day would be a vacation or weekend day so we're not at work, and we can get outside and enjoy that perfect weather doing something fun with family.

As it turns out, I think we did have a perfect day just a few days ago, on Friday. We were with the family staying at a vacation house in the Deep Creek area, and the weather was just beautiful, and perfect for a day hiking at Swallow Falls.

2. What's one thing you wish you knew before starting high school?

I wish I'd known that I didn't have to decide everything about what I wanted to do after high school by midway through my tenth grade year, and that a four-year university isn't the only path to success. As it turned out, I did take a gap year and then did not finish my degree, but I felt bad and embarrassed in a way that I wasn't headed straight to college after my high school grad. Less pressure on myself might have helped me feel more confident that I could take time to be sure what I wanted to do.

 3. What's something that bothers you if it's not done perfectly?

When I handwrite something like a greeting card, a check or an address and I make a mistake or my penmanship isn't as even and clear as I'd like. I don't rewrite it if it's not perfect (I don't usually have that luxury when I sign a birthday or congratulations card, after all), but it really does bother me when my own handwriting is not perfect.

4. What's the most overrated food you're convinced people are just pretending to enjoy? What's a trendy food you actually do enjoy and would say is definitely not overrated?

There are a lot of foods that I'm baffled how people could actually LIKE them. Raw oysters. Shrimp. Crawfish. Mushrooms. Yuck. Matcha tea is the trendy one that I find odd and overrated. It doesn't completely gross me out but I can't see why it's so popular when it looks and feels rather like you're  drinking chalky pond water. Are people really enjoying it that much? Doesn't seem possible to me.

I don't even know what foods are trendy. And have I tried any of them? Sourdough bread seems to still be trending, even several years after grocery shortages compelled a lot of people to try their hand at it. I have always loved sourdough bread so I don't consider it overrated. It seems like hot honey is kind of a thing now and I really like that too. Oh I know! The bubble tea type drinks like the Sunny Skies drinks at Starbucks. Delicious and refreshing, and I love them!

5.  Wrapping it up this week with five fun this or thats . . .

personal stylist or personal chef?
dance like nobody's watching or sing like nobody's listening?
unlimited tacos or free pizza?
bookshelf organization - by size or by genre?
ten minutes late or ten minutes early?

I can make a case for needing both. I'll take the personal stylist.

I'll happily sing like nobody's listening. I kind of already do that!

Free pizza!

Books should be ordered by genre first, although I do like when my personal bookshelves look lined up by size too. When I buy book series from favorite authors, it annoys me when one is a different edition and doesn't match the rest of the set.

I only wish I could make a habit of ten minutes early. I know myself well enough to know that I'm usually closer to ten minutes late, to my great embarrassment.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Turns out this is a really short and interrupted work week for me. I had Monday off as it was the last week of our vacation. I was at work trying to get caught up on Tuesday and my husband texted me that I needed to find out if I could switch the time off I was requesting for his upcoming surgery to THIS week instead of next week. So that's what I did. His surgery was rescheduled so now I will be off Thursday and probably will need to go in a little late on Friday. Anyway, your good thoughts and prayers are appreciated for the surgery - he is having a melanoma removed from his ear.

Thinking about prayer gets me thinking about spiritual things, which is a nice lead-in for me to remind you about the Wednesday Quotes link-up. The current theme is "Spirituality" and you can find it here: WQ - Spiritual Life

What do you think a perfect summer day looks like? Leave a comment and let me know!

    1. We had a great day for that hike - not too hot - and I'm really happy with the photo. Thanks to the young lady we asked to snap it for us! We are home from the surgery and all went well; thanks for the well-wishes!

  2. I love the picture of your family/friends (?) standing on the rock. It's always so nice to look back on those kinds of pictures years or decades later.

    1. We do like to get a few photos of the whole family group whenever we're all together. Always good memories, and I suspect they'll be treasured years down the road. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  3. Glad you had a great trip to Deep Creek. I am the same with my handwriting. And we seem to hand write things less these days and my writing suffers as a result. I will add your hubs to my prayers. Take care.

    1. I think writing by hand less is contributing to the mistakes I make when I do it. Thanks for visiting, commenting, and praying for my hubby.

  5. I hope that all goes well with the surgery. I am the same way with my handwriting. My writing is so odd. Sometimes it's super neat and sometimes it's not at all. That park is so pretty! Wow, I'm glad you had a perfect summer day. It sure looks like it!!

    1. Surgery went well today and now he's recovering. My handwriting that's just for me to read is probably thoroughly illegible to anyone else but I don't care - I do care when someone else will be looking at it! And I used to get so irritated when someone else would write on my wall calendar and the handwriting wasn't mine! haha Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  6. I hope your granddaughter has a good return to school. How wonderful that you had a perfect summers day, it looks like you all had a great time.
I remember years ago being told you had to go to university to succeed in anything but now things have changed and it's not the only route you can take.
I don't understand people liking oysters or anything matcha but I do love mushrooms.
I hope your husbands surgery goes well and he makes a speedy recovery.

    1. I'm glad there are plenty of successful routes one can choose other than university, I hate for young people to feel pressured or obligated if college isn't for them, or at least not right away.
Thanks so much for the well-wishes for my hubby's surgery and recovery!

  8. First, I'll be praying for your husband. Second, your trip looked like a wonderful time for everyone. Next, I think I agree with every single one of those foods. I haven't tried anything matcha yet, but I would like to before deciding I don't like it. I really haven't heard anything good about it, though. I don't know that I would like any of those bubble teas. My granddaughter loves them.

As far as high school, I took several gap years before starting college. I always knew I wanted to be a teacher, but I had a teacher tell me I HAD to go to college with a brain like mine. Being the contrarian I am, I didn't. I think that may be my biggest regret. But, I also know having children before beginning my teaching career made me a better teacher. And, if I'd gone to college right out of high school, what would the arc of my life have been like? I'm pretty sure not what I have, and that would be terrible.

    1. Part of me wishes I'd continued in college and finished my degree, but like you, I wonder how it would have affected the way my life turned out. I love how things went for me with getting married, having children and homeschooling them, so I have no regrets. Even if I dream about going back to school sometimes. LOL

Thanks for your prayers and well-wishes, and thank you for stopping by and commenting!

  9. I enjoyed your answers. While I don't have the best handwriting, I try my best and get irritated when I make a mistake. I like matcha if it's made right.

    1. I've had matcha and I don't mind it but I certainly don't understand why it's so popular. Maybe the times I tried it it wasn't made right! LOL Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
