What an odd choice for Word of the Year! I guess brain rot has become more prevalent but I wouldn't have thought of it as a word to sum up 2024 or that was used all the time throughout the year. I do my share of doom-scrolling (usually on Instagram) but I don't think I spend my social media time drowning in stupid stuff. I think a word like 'polarized' or 'politicized' might describe 2024 well. It seemed like every issue had a political angle inserted into it and the news media seemed determined to make it divisive even if it was an issue where there was a lot of common ground.
I have never done a polar bear plunge, nor do I plan to! I think the closest I've come would be hot tubbing (or being at Banff Hot Springs) outside during extremely cold weather. We didn't make any big plans for today since it's just the two of us and hubby went into work this morning to check on things. We have a bunch of cleaning and organizing to get started on, and a day off is a good chance to work on that, and we're considering going for a hike later, although it's chilly enough to make that uncomfortable. We don't have a traditional New Year's Day menu, but I usually make 'Niejoashe Koake' (Low German for 'New Years Cookies').
3. What's something that brings you joy and how will you do more of it in this new year?
Making music is one thing, and I've been working on a more consistent personal rehearsal schedule for my chorus music. I've also floated a plan to hubby of moving my keyboard down to the living room to make it more accessible (and as a bonus, it would free up a bit of space in the spare room) so we'll probably try that after we get all the holiday decorating put away.
Being with people and entertaining also brings me joy and I'm looking forward to doing more with church friends this year. I use the word 'entertaining' rather loosely because I don't do elaborate parties or dinners, but I do like having people over for a casual get-together. I asked for - and received - a charcuterie board for Christmas, thinking that since we have limited space it might be more doable for me to invite people over for small plates rather than for dinner. Hopefully I'm brave enough to extend some invitations!
I guess I don't? At least not in a serious way. But yes, there's kind of a let down feeling after all the excitement and togetherness of the holidays is over and we're back to the regular routines without much going on until spring. I think I'll use the downtime to do cozy things at home and for preparation and planning.
I am working on my personal Word of the Year, which I think will be "Practice", and will have some goals for the year. I've sometimes made a bucket list for a year, but I think this year I'm going to do more of a "25 in '25" list or two. It just sounds like it should be a thing! Like reading 25 books, visiting 25 local or state parks, trying 25 new recipes, and so on. That's just been rolling around in my head the last few days so I haven't made the list(s) yet.
My WOTY for 2024 was Rhythm and I used that to try and establish balanced and helpful routines and rhythms for my days and weeks and seasons. I kept a sort of "sentence per day" journal which I shared at the end of each month so I could see those rhythms developing. My December Rhythm wrap-up post will be up soon and I'll also share a 2025 WOTY post.
WOTY 2024: WQ - Rhythm Inspires
We were able to spend five days in Maryland celebrating Christmas and my birthday with the whole family! Gifts, games, and a lot of good food. We were also able to get together with a few friends. We got back home on Sunday night and yesterday, for New Year's Eve, we went to the Blue Jackets game, which included some indoor fireworks after the game.
Happy New Year!
Wishing you all the best for 2025! Do you have a Word of the Year or other wishes and plans for the year ahead? Leave a comment and let me know!
I have never heard of indoor fireworks - how cool!! Happy New Year!!
ReplyDeleteWe hadn't either! It was pretty much like the pyrotechnics used at concerts but it was fun! Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteIt sounds like you had a wonderful holiday! Happy New Year
ReplyDeleteThank you! Wishing you a Happy New Year as well!
DeleteSounds like a lovely holiday. I'm glad you were able to spend time with family. I haven't posted my word but I've been reading scripture related to a word that has spoken to me and it feels right. I might blog about it, haven't decided on that part yet. I also like the idea of the 25 in 25...I will mull that over too, although I think I do better at getting a shortish seasonal bucket list accomplished. I always add things there that need doing around the house and it helps me feel productive. Happy new year!
ReplyDeleteI just hope it doesn't take me too long to think of whatever my 25 in 25 will be! I also have a lot of things that need doing at home that I add to my list at the start of a new year. Happy New Year!
DeleteDoom-scrolling, that's a term! I love the casual get-together style of entertaining as well. This summer it was barbecues with friends (the husband is a grill master and everything was always delicious) and some fun birthday celebrations for members of the small group. Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteWe're more likely to invite people over during the summer when we can grill. It's just harder for me with the very limited kitchen space I have. Thanks for stopping by and commenting! Happy new Year!
DeleteI don’t understand the word thing. I wish I knew what to do with the word once chosen. 🤷♀️
ReplyDeleteLooks like a nice holiday you had. I’m wishing you an awesome New Year for you and your family.
It can be hard to really make use of the Word of the Year, but for me it's something I want to focus on or work on in my life. It helps to have a Scripture to go with it, I think.
DeleteThanks for stopping by and commenting! Happy New Year!
Yours is such a beautiful family, Kym! We, too, have very limited kitchen/eating space, so I'm intrigued by the idea of a charcuterie board -- so many options! Breaking down a Bucket List into 25's sounds not only possible -- but fun. Thanks for the idea!
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty excited about learning how to lay out a nice charcuterie board or two - I will be practicing on my husband and kids to start with! I still haven't made my 25 in 25 lists, and I'm glad you like the idea too. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
DeleteAhh, what fun to have 5 days of celebrating with your family including your birthday. Happy belated birthday to you! I'm hoping for more casual get togethers this year. I really like your 25 idea of 25 different things to try throughout 2025! I tried 2 new recipes this morning so I'm ahead of the game already! Happy New Year to you.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the birthday wishes! 25 new recipes in '25 was one of my ideas too, and I've already done one new one. I'll have to start that list just so I can check something off on it! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
DeleteThat 25 in 25 sounds like a lot of fun! I hope to spend some time this month organizing and purging a bit.
ReplyDeleteI definitely need to do some organizing and purging - my spare room and desk are a disaster at the moment. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
DeleteHi, I love your idea of 25 in 25. Thank you for sharing. :-)
ReplyDeleteI also like your word .. practice.
Thank you for sharing all the photos today. I enjoyed seeing your family.
xx oo
Carla
I'm glad you like the 25 in 25 idea - and my WOTY. Thank you so much for stopping by and for your kind comments!
DeleteLovely to spend time with your family. I haven't done a word of the year for a while or a list of things to do but I did manage a good book challenge last year that I'm aiming to do again this year and I might compile a short list of other things to get done. Happy New Year.
ReplyDeleteI like doing the book challenges even though I no longer come close to the number of books completed that others do. It's not a competition, right?! For me it's reading at least a couple of books that I wouldn't have thought to look at if not for a challenge prompt. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
