I'm participating in the Wednesday Quotes link-up hosted by Marsha at Always Write. Our focus this week is the word "bold" and my first question to myself was whether being bold is more of a good thing or a bad thing. I suppose a case could be made on either side, but I lean towards it being positive. A defintion seemed to lean that way as well:
bold - adjective - showing an ability to take risks; confident and courageous
Boldness doesn't mean rude, obnoxious, loud, or disrespectful. Being bold is being firm, sure, confident, fearless, daring, strong, resilient, and not easily intimidated. It means you're willing to go where you've never been, willing to try what you've never tried, and willing to trust what you've never trusted. Boldness is quiet, not noisy. ~Mike Yaconelli
I think we need more bold people on the side of freedom and goodness and justice in today's world. Knowing you're part of a movement making the world a better place should give you courage, right? I believe the people that want to do what's right and good are in the majority; but it's easy to feel intimidated when it seems the power is in the hands of selfish and tyrranical people, and when there are few voices of reason and virtue bold enough to make themselves heard. Take heart and take courage! Goodness will triumph in the end!
Virtue is bold, and goodness never fearful. ~William Shakespeare
Surprise yourself every day with your own courage. ~Denholm Elliott
Freedom lies in being bold. ~Robert Frost
I choose bold. I choose action. I choose what's right for the people. I choose to make a difference. ~Bill Richardson
It is in the midst of disasters that bold men grow bolder. ~Henry IV
Begin, be bold and venture to be wise. ~Horace
Prayer in private results in boldness in public. ~Edwin Louis Cole
And there's the key. Being properly prepared, being strengthened by the courage that comes from being confident that we are standing on a foundation of truth and that we are doing what God wants us to do. Which was my Scripture and a Snapshot theme this past Sunday:
Finally, grow powerful in union with the Lord, in union with his mighty strength! Use all the armor and weaponry that God provides, so that you will be able to stand against the rulers, authorities and cosmic powers governing this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realm. So take up every piece of war equipment God provides; so that when the evil day comes, you will be able to resist; and when the battle is won, you will still be standing. Therefore, stand! Have the belt of truth buckled around your waist, put on righteousness for a breastplate, and wear on your feet the readiness that comes from the Good News of shalom. Always carry the shield of trust, with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the Evil One. And take the helmet of deliverance; along with the sword given by the Spirit, that is, the Word of God; as you pray at all times, with all kinds of prayers and requests, in the Spirit, vigilantly and persistently, for all God's people.
~Ephesians 6:10-18 (CJB)~
Shouldn't we expect far greater glory under the new way, now that the Holy Spirit is giving life? . . . Since this new way gives us such confidence, we can be very bold.
~II Corinthians 3:8, 12~
For I fully expect and hope that I will never be ashamed, but that I will continue to be bold for Christ, as I have been in the past. And I trust that my life will bring honor to Christ, whether I live or die.
~Philippians 1:20~
I love that song! For so many reasons!
And I can't leave without a couple of more humorous quotes. I sometimes wonder whether some people think that's true of me. I do have a heart though, I assure you! And the second one is just so true, and probably about other foods too. Do you agree?
Legend has it that when God created me, he gave me a big distinctive voice, a lot of boldness and no heart. ~Ethel Merman
He was a bold man that first ate an oyster. ~Jonathan Swift

You found some great quotes, Kym. I love your bold statements about them, too. This is a new song to me, and I love it. Thanks for bringing all this to WQ.
ReplyDeleteIt's such a great song and one of my favorites! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
DeleteMaybe it was a fried oyster served with hushpuppies and a loaded baked potato??
ReplyDeleteYou are right, BOLD is one of those words that can have positive and negative connotations. But I think of it as a positive quality in people. Most bold people know what they want and aren't afraid to go after it.
that might explain why he was willing to try an oyster - would never have convinced me though!
DeleteI agree about bold people knowing what they want. Perhaps it's when taken to an extreme that bold gets negative.
Thanks for stopping in and adding to the conversation!
I really enjoyed your quotes this week.
