Wednesday Hodgepodge - Some Surprising Thoughts

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1. If your life had a theme song for this past year what would it be?

This was looking like a question that would be hard to answer because nothing came to mind immediately. There are tons of songs I love and that resonate with me, but a theme song? So to stop myself from overthinking, I just looked through one of my Spotify playlists at possibilities and this is the one that caught my eye as being a good theme song for me - We Won't Be Shaken by Building 429.

2. Chocolate cake, chocolate milkshake, chocolate ice cream, chocolate truffle, chocolate mousse, chocolate candy bar or a fudgy chocolate brownie . . . of the chocolate treats listed, which one is your favorite? Which one have you tasted most recently? Or maybe you don't like chocolate?

All of them? I love chocolate, but especially dark chocolate! If I had to pick a favorite, I think I'd go with the chocolate truffle; and the one I've had most recently would either be the truffle or a candy bar. I had a slice of chocolate orange yesterday and I think that would be considered a candy bar.

3. What has surprised you recently?

Whenever I discuss current events or politics with a friend, at least one of us will say something like, "I don't think anything will surprise me any more," and mean it! That may be true of the craziness and nonsense of the political and news cycles, but I'm quite capable of being surprised―pleasantly!―by things in my day to day life. I've been a little surprised by how much I look forward to getting to chorus rehearsal, how much I enjoyed the pool here (and that I regretted not going over more often), and even by how quickly time seems to go by. Like we'll soon be coming up on a year since our move. Sometimes it's surprising that it's already almost a year and other times it's surprising to think that it's only been a year.

4. September 19th is National Voter Registration Day in the US. Are you registered to vote in whatever state or country you happen to live in right now? If not, why not? Not counting a political race, what's something you've had to vote on recently?

I am registered to vote in Ohio, and not that long ago I had to make sure we were no longer registered in Maryland, and honestly I didn't think the postcard system they used for that update was very secure. It wasn't a political race in terms of candidates to vote for, but a bit over a month ago Ohioans voted on a state constitutional amendment.

5. Do you like to hike? If so, when's the last time you went hiking and where'd ya go? If you're not a hiker are you a walker? Is walking (for exercise, etc) part of your daily/weekly routine?

I wonder if I qualify as a hiker when my hikes are relatively short and easy. I do like to hike but we're not hard-core - no rugged back-country or camping hikes for us! It's been a little while, but a couple months ago we visited some state parks with good hiking trails. We were at
Hocking Hills State Park, Rockbridge State Nature Preserve, and Charleston Falls Preserve. I like walking as well, and I'd like to be walking daily, but right now it's usually a couple times a week that we go for a longer walk. Around the walking trail in our neighborhood or in one of the Metro Parks.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I think I finally have my days straight again. My husband and I made an unexpected quick trip to Ontario on Thursday evening so he could visit his dad in the hospital. We came back home on Sunday and were back to work on Monday, and Monday afternoon got the word that his dad had passed away. Needless to say, our routines were a bit off over the past week and there have been some difficult times.

What has surprised you recently? I hope you've had pleasant surprises! Leave a comment and let me know!

  2. My achilles acts up if we go too crazy hiking. Steep is tough, coming down is generally worse than going up as far as my ankle is concerned. I'm so sorry for your family's loss. Take care.

    1. I have more trouble coming down a steep incline too, in my case I just don't have quite as much flexibility in my ankle in replacement knee so it can be a challenge. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  4. I'm sorry to hear about your father-in-law. Your photos look like lovely hiking/walking trips. State and National Parks often have an option for those of us who like to take it easy.

  5. I'm so sorry about your father-in-law's passing. Unsettling, but surely it meant a lot to him to see his son. I love the song you've chosen. There really are so many choices; it can seem overwhelming!

  6. I am so sorry to hear of your father in law's passing! My prayers are with you and your family.

I love to hike but I am definitely not a camping type of hiker-- like ever. I don't even like to carry a pack with my water bottle in it. And I too love most anything made with chocolate; especially dark chocolate!

    1. I agree - I'd rather not have to carry anything when hiking, which tends to limit how far I'll go! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  8. I feel the same about news not surprising me. Easy hikes are the best. And I'm so sorry for your loss.

  9. I definitely tend to overthink some questions. I'm with you..many songs resonate, and it really just depends. Costco sells an amazing trufffle they sell during Christmas and I love them. They're addicting. I agree that there isn't much that would surprise me anymore. Your photos of your hike/walk, are so pretty.
