Wednesday Hodgepodge - Motivational Thoughts

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

I saw this at a shop and it's now on my wishlist!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1. What motivates you to work hard?

I'm motivated when I'm enjoying what I'm doing. Overall, at least, as there are usually unpleasant aspects to anything that involves hard work. I'm most motivated when I feel like I'm contributing to something larger and that what I'm contributing matters. Accountability motivates me too.

2. It's been said "Ignorance is bliss" . . . is it?

Of course I can think of situations where ignorance probably would be bliss, as well as situations in which it would be awful to not know what's going on. In general, I think ignorance is not a good thing. Especially if it's willful ignorance―not knowing because you refuse to take in any information or ask any questions, or stubbornly pretending that you don't want or need any information about something important.

3. Would you rather be stuck on a broken elevator or a broken ski lift? Explain. Have you ever actually been stuck on either? Of the common fears listed here what's your #1 -
heights - enclosed spaces - snakes - public speaking - the dark - flying

If I had to choose, I think I'd take the broken elevator. Unless it's in a burning building, I suppose! But all things considered, I think I'd rather deal with claustrophobia than with being out in the open, high off the ground, and in the cold.

I have been stuck in an elevator, and although it was just a short time, it was very disconcerting, and I avoided elevators for a long time after that! It was quite a few years ago when dropping my son off for the classroom part of drivers ed. A few parents took the elevator down after dropping our kids, and it was only maybe three stories, but the elevator was way more accessible than the stairwell. Well, it got stuck between floors, and I'm sure it wasn't more than ten minutes at the very most, but it might as well have been ten hours before it finally started moving again and we all felt like our lives had been spared. Haha! Honestly I said I would never ride on another elevator again, but only a couple months later we visited New York City and I rode the elevator up to the top of 30 Rock. I managed to not whimper too loudly or have a panic attack.

Of those fears . . . it's a toss-up between enclosed spaces and heights, but the edge goes to heights. I don't like enclosed spaces but I can usually calm myself and convince myself it's okay. Heights are NOT okay. I am afraid to drive over huge bridges, or on roads with a steep drop-off. I stay way back from the guard rails at places like 30 Rock. Even back from the glass if there are floor to ceiling windows in tall buildings, and there is no chance I would walk out on a glass floor. Nope. Observation decks like the one over Niagara Falls make me very nervous. My fear of heights contributes to my complete lack of interest in skiing (a ski lift sounds dreadful!). Incongruously, I have ziplined across a huge waterfall (as I shared last week) and I have been on gondola lift rides and enjoyed myself. And I do love all the big rollercoasters and thrill rides at theme parks, but I will not ride a Ferris wheel. The rollercoasters don't scare me because for some reason being strapped down so I can't move is fine with me, but the same height or much less on a Ferris wheel is terrifying because the seatbelt system is just too loose.

One of these rides is okay, and the other one is not.

4. What's something you ike about the town or city where you live?

I live in a suburb community of Columbus. I love that my town is so clean and family-friendly, and overall I like the unified look of all the architecture. The downtown area is really pretty, and the library is wonderful!

I'm not a big city fan, in general, but living only about 20 minutes from Columbus city center has taught me to appreciate the sports entertainment that is nearby and affordable (Columbus Blue Jackets hockey and Columbus Clippers baseball). Columbus also has a lot of beautiful parkland in the Metro Park system and some interesting arts and shopping districts.

5. Life is too short to ____________________________.

Life is too short to waste time stewing over things that don't matter or that you can't change.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

We went to Maryland for the weekend, to celebrate our granddaughter's first birthday, and I'm starting to wonder how long it will take me to catch up on things after only just a couple of days of vacation. Guess I need some motivation!

What motivates you? I hope it's not fear! Leave a comment and let me know!

  1. I feel like I'm always playing catch up here, but eventually I capture what I want to capture, mostly anyway. I do not blog in real time lol. My oldest was born in Columbus and we lived in Worthington. Just one year but we enjoyed the time there. It's so flat, we missed the mountains, but we liked the area overall.

    1. I miss the "little" mountains we lived close to in Maryland, and the grand Rocky mountains I grew up with. Oh well. It is flat here, but there are some wonderful rolling hills in the area with great hiking trails through canyons and caves and the like, so that's a comfort. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  3. It always amazes me that just a short time away can cause such a backlog!! I love that picture with the stream . . .I would like to be there right now.

  4. I don't have to worry about the ski lift problem, but I do think about getting stuck on an elevator on a regular basis (the thinking not the getting stuck). I am very claustrophobic and really had to give myself a pep talk to go into our crawl space to find some things. And, no, going down there once does not make me any more eager to return.

I'm so glad you were able to celebrate your granddaughter's first birthday. Our oldest celebrated her 14th this spring, and it seems like only yesterday she was one!

Catch up? What's that? It seems every week, if not day, has tasks I've got to get accomplished. And, I do always think I've just got to get this done. I suppose that's almost a metaphor for life, right?

    1. Grandchildren seem to grow up faster than our children did! Yes, catching up is pretty hard to do, and I spend a lot of my time just getting the next thing done, and then the next thing, and so on. :sigh: Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  5. I do enjoy my cuppa in the morning. The older I get the longer it takes me to get back on track after a getaway. It's nice to have the best of two worlds, a smaller community with a large city close by to enjoy all it has to offer. Hope you catch up soon!

    1. Yes, I do like having the best of both worlds in our community, though I'd be quite happy to move a little further into the country. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  6. I got stuck in an elevator on my high school trip to France and since the girls and I hardly spoke French it was a bit disconcerting. Thankfully it wasn't that long before they had us on our way and my French teacher had shown up to translate in between but it did make me leery of elevators for quite some time.

  7. Your blog is delightful! I'm seeing it for the first time, visiting via Hodgepodge. I have poked around a bit and like the "Share 4 Somethings" post from earlier this summer. And the graphic on today's post about drinking more coffee -- good one. Your blog design is really good too. Very interesting and attractive.
