Wednesday Hodgepodge - Welcome November

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1.  Our November Hodgepodges always include a question related to gratitude. What is one small thing you're grateful for today?

I can think of quite a few big things I'm grateful for today, but I'm supposed to name a small thing. I'm grateful for our walk-in shower with a handheld showerhead that I plan to use today, and I will be grateful for clean hair once I have done that.

2. Chrysanthemums - pansies - burning bush - ornamental cabbage - camellias . . . your favorite in an autumn garden? Would we find any of these in your yard/garden this year?

Camellias are part of an autumn garden? I had no idea. Maybe we are not in the hardiness zone where the autumn flowering camellia grows well. I guess I'll have to ask my horticulturist hubby about this! So you won't find that in my yard, at least not this year. We currently have chrysanthemums in pots in the front and on the back deck. We've had pansies in the fall, but not at this house yet.

3.  If you could clear out or organize one physical space or mental habit before the year ends, what would it be?

I would love if we could clear out all the stuff that is still in our Maryland house! That is a rather general physical space, because that would include the basement of the house and the garage, and there are probably a few odds and ends in other parts of the house too, but that would be my wish. Part of me wants to just pull up the dumpster to the house and launch everything into it, but that is a bit extreme and there really are some things that I want to retrieve and keep, like my Grandma's rocking chair and the desk my dad built for me.

4.  Brussel sprouts . . . love 'em or no thank you? If you said love 'em how do you like them prepared?

No thank you! Yuck! Brussels sprouts are one of the foods I loathed as a kid and promised myself I would never eat once I was an adult.

5.  It's reassuring to know that ___________________________.

God is in control. It may not seem that way, and there are so many things in this life that confuse and upset us, but we can be sure that God is not surprised or dismayed by anything that happens. His purpose will prevail in the end, and nothing happens that he cannot use for our good and for his glory.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. ~Romans 8:28

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Today I will use the random thought space to summarize the past week as briefly as I can, because it's been a wild ride! From Tuesday to Saturday I was at the Sing United International Convention and Competition in Columbus (Sing United is the new name for Sweet Adelines) so while I was at the hotel and convention center, I didn't actually have to travel, so that was nice. My chorus, Scioto Valley Chorus, competed in the semi-finals on Thursday and made the top ten to compete in the finals on Saturday. We placed fifth in the world! There are about 600 choruses worldwide and the top 30 were here for semi-finals, so it's a big deal! We had a blast performing and competing, and cheering on the other choruses and all the quartets that came to compete as well.

On Sunday afternoon my hubby picked me up from the hotel and we got takeout to have a quick lunch. Later in the afternoon while he was at hockey I started feeling really awful with indigestion type pain that was worse than usual, and I realized it was likely a gallbladder attack. It got steadily worse through the evening so we decided it was time to head to the ER. We spent the entire night in the ER waiting room, with me in constant writhing pain (I'm sure the other people in the waiting room were sick of me, but I couldn't help that) and unable to get any sleep. When I was finally examined in the morning, the gallbladder was confirmed to be the problem and by mid afternoon I was in surgery having it removed. I got home from the hospital yesterday and although I feel much better overall, my midsection is extremely tender and I am missing all this week at work. So from last Wednesday to today has been quite the roller coaster!

Needless to say, I'm grateful that the gallbladder behaved itself until AFTER competition, and until I was home with my husband to care for me. I'm grateful for the great medical care I received, and that robot arm surgery is a thing. And now perhaps it makes sense why I'll be so grateful to get my hair washed today and feel a little better about myself!

What are you grateful for today? Leave a comment and let me know!

  1. Oh, Kym, ouch and yikes. Glad your gallbladder waited till after the competition to act so rude. Hope you heal up real well and adjust to not having it, too. Congratulations to you and your group for your 5th in the world placement! Well done. That must have been a fun competition to listen to. Love your answer to #5! Have a peaceful day.

  2. Oh goodness. So many highs and lows. First congratulations on your 5th place award. That's fantastic and I'm so glad you weren't feeling badly then. I'm sorry about your gallbladder but glad you were able to have it taken care of. I've only experienced that once and they didn't remove it, but said it would likely happen again so we shall see. It's been 10 years now. Several people have told me the last thing they ate before their worst attack was a hotdog, which I love, but have not had one since. Take care and rest.
