Summer Break with the Hodgepodge

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1.  What's something you enjoy now that your younger self would never have appreciated?

Politics. I had zero interest in politics until I was maybe twenty or twenty-one, so my very much younger self would not have appreciated it at all, but I find it fascinating now.

Good quality shoes. Up until maybe fifteen years ago I was fine with cute shoes as long as they were reasonably comfortable and very affordable. Now although I still want my shoes to look nice, I'm perfectly content to give up some cuteness for shoes that are comfortable and supportive and really good quality. I have one pair of shoes that I bought ahead of my knee surgery as "house shoes" and I've always called them my "Herman Munster shoes" because that's what they remind me of. They are scuffed up and a mess now but still structurally sound, and the most comfortable pair of shoes I've ever owned. I have been meaning to order a new pair from the same maker before the ones I have look completely decrepit, and I'm watching for a good sale because they are not cheap. My husband has been surprised at the dollar amounts I've paid for shoes a couple of times, but good shoes are worth it to me.

2. What was peaceful about today?

I'm writing this late Wednesday, and I do think it was a little quieter and slower pace at work today so that was peaceful in a sense. My commutes have generally been a little less hectic lately, mostly because school is out, I would say.

3. It's National Blueberry Day (July 8). Will you celebrate? You can have one of the following right now - a slice of blueberry pie, a warm blueberry muffin, or a stack of blueberry pancakes . . . which do you choose?

This or that - blueberries or raspberries? blueberries or strawberries?

I guess I missed out on celebrating blueberries today, but I'm okay with it. I like blueberries but they are not my favorite. I generally like them best when they are in combination with other berries. I would choose the warm blueberry muffin - that sounds delicious! I would choose raspberries or strawberries over blueberries in almost every scenario.

4.  Do you need a break? From what?

I would love a break from work. Not that I need it so desperately, but just because I'm tired of having to get up and go to work every day. I don't think I was built for working full time out of the home.

5.  What has surprised you most about getting older?

That most of the time I feel like it's not how I expected it to be, but also I don't think I had any expectations. Like when you're a kid, you dream about what you'll do when you're a teenager or when you "grow up", and when you're a teen you start dreaming about college and your career and what it will be like when you get married. And then as a young adult you might dream about starting your family or buying your first house, or where you'll move to on your next career step. But as far as I can tell, not very many of us spend much time in our earlier adult years dreaming about what life will be like when we are empty nesters or grandparents, beyond maybe some vague plans of what we'd like to do when we retire and don't have to plan around work all the time. So all that to say, it has surprised me that I was so completely without expectations or plans and it keeps surprising me that I'm --- years old and we've been married for --- years, and my kids are ---- years old already. Like when did that happen?

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Another progress report on settling into our house: Little by little it's getting more organized. I am taking my time choosing new furniture for the living room because what we have is perfectly fine, and I don't want to pick something I don't love just for the sake of getting it. I have a small gateleg table on order for the kitchen and we're going to give the table and chairs that is in there now to our son. That will free up some room in the kitchen and help me figure out cabinet organization in there. I started unpacking the china and such and getting it into the china cabinet, so that's a few less boxes. Tonight we bought a floor lamp because if there is one thing this house needs it's light! The windows are big but there really aren't overhead light fixtures except in the kitchen and bathrooms. That means there's no chandelier in the dining area, so a good floor lamp or two was a must! I've picked out the bedframe I want for the guest room so that will be the next project - doing a final measurement and getting that ordered. And while we're waiting, there's a dressing table I bought from IKEA that needs to be put together for my bedroom. Whew! Lots to do!

New hall bench - the bakers rack will get moved over

starting to look like an actual dining room!

How are you spending any summer break time you have? Leave a comment and let me know!

  1. Oh yes! Good quality shoes is a great one. I think I wore a pair of Bass penny loafers every day all day long through much of high school; most day without socks even! T here is not way I could do that nowadays. I need far more support than that.

    1. Right?! I used to get all my shoes on clearance sale or just really cheap, because at those prices I didn't care if they lasted long - I just wanted something cute! And flip flops are easy to find cute ones dirt cheap too. But nowadays, I NEED good support and turns out you have to pay a little more for that. LOL

  2. Now I am older I seem to have less interest in politics now and yes to the shoes, pretty and cute shoes are nice but I am all for comfort now and good quality shoes.
It sounds like you are settling into your house well.

    1. Oh funny that our interest levels moved the opposite way on politics. Comfortable quality shoes are more important as we get older, for sure.

  3. Since my ankle incident I have been more careful about what I wear. I need more support if there's a lot of walking happening. I'm glad you're settling in to your new home. It takes time and it's good not to rush selecting furniture if you have things that work in the interim. I am planning to post the most recent Everyday Images on Monday. Have a great weekend!

    1. My bad knees were what forced me to be more mindful of having supportive shoes.
Yes, I think taking my time over furniture selection will be best, and I'm glad we have good furniture so that I don't have to feel rushed.

  4. I used to have no interest in politics until I realized it's selfish not to care!

    1. yes I do think our change of perspective often leads us to take more notice of what's going on in politics. Some people get more interested and some people back away. But I believe we should all care at least enough to be informed voters when election days roll around.

  5. Oh politics is a great answer! Or maybe for me current affairs in general. I had to force myself to take more interest in what was happening in the world, and now I actively enjoy keeping abreast of things, but until my early 20s I was shamefully oblivious. Someone else mentioned coffee, and that's another one I should have thought of. Aagh!
