A Balanced Wednesday Hodgepodge

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1.  What do you make more complicated than it needs to be?

Almost every project, at the start! The way I envision things I want to do begins with something pretty elaborate, which contributes to me procrastinating, because it's too daunting. The organization system I think I want in my pantry or my closet or my bookkeeping or even on my blog is too involved to be practical for me in the real world. And to be fair to myself, once I get started, I usually realize this pretty quickly and simplify. The most recent example that comes to mind was several months ago when I admitted to myself that once again the pretty calendar planner that I had such high hopes for was not practical for me. I was making it more complicated than it needed to be. So I made a promise to myself that I would never buy another planner, but would simply use undated notebooks or journals to keep track of my lists and appointments and notes in the most linear way possible.

Keep it simple!

2. What impresses you?

People who have worked hard, persevered, and focused to overcome huge challenges to achieve something amazing. Some of these people are written about in the history books, but there are many whose stories are not as well known, and yet they overcame the odds and made an impact. And we each know people around us who aren't famous but have conquered obstacles to succeed in their field, to master knowledge or skills, to recover after a tragedy, and more. Even more impressive when these people are also kind, gracious, generous, and joyful.

3. On a scale of 1-10 how picky of an eater are you? (1=extremely and 10=not at all) If you had to eat a meal made entirely of one color what color would you choose?

I generally describe myself as a picky eater because I do have some pretty strict personal food rules around certain things. (I don't eat internal organs, fungus, things that crawl on the ocean floor, anything resembling or related to an insect, or anything that is looking back at me) But I'm usually willing to at least taste something new. So I'd give myself the number 3 or 4 on that scale. Definitely on the picky end of the spectrum, but I've got enough flexibility to try some new things.

I'm going to be completely practical and choose brown for my monochromatic meal. I think that gives me the most options because it could include meat, bread, potatoes, rice, pasta, gravy . . . vegetables might be an issue but I don't mind skipping them for one meal. Haha. I could drink coffee or tea or some soda. And perhaps most importantly, chocolate and caramel things could be considered for dessert.

See what I'm saying? Mostly brown for these meals and desserts:

4.  What does balance in life mean to you? Does your life currently feel 'balanced'?

A balanced life has work and play, "have to" and "want to", busy-ness and rest in healthy proportions. Doing the things you need to do first and then having the freedom to enjoy leisure and hobbies. Balance is having the various areas of life properly ordered. For the most part my life feels pretty balanced, though as a life-long procrastinator, I do really struggle with that aspect of looking after the "have to" items before indulging in my personal "want to" items. So that gets out of balance quite often. The other area of my life that frequently gets out of balance is my sleep-wake cycle. I don't sleep well as it is, and I don't nearly always practice good sleep habits which exacerbates the problem.

5.  If you could travel the world for a year what would be your first destination?

If I'm traveling for a whole year, I could visit a lot of the places on my wish list, but I think I would start with Iceland. I'm fascinated by its landscape that has geysers and hot springs as well as glaciers and waterfalls. And I'd obviously want to go during a time when the northern lights are at peak.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I don't really have anything, but the question about balance reminded me of a WQ theme early last year called "In Balance". Here are a few highlights:

Simple Meal Planning - Plan to Eat

  1. I love that you are learning what works for your personal calendar. I love a calendar book, but in reality, it doesn't work on a day-to-day basis for me either. My food choices were like yours for the same reasons! Hope you get some better sleep soon.

    1. I just wish I hadn't wasted so much money on planners that I used only half the time. :-/ Oh well, better late than never. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  2. Yes to what you said in #1, I do exactly the same by over complicating things to start with.
Ohh! I could happily eat all of those meals and I would love to visit Iceland too.

  3. Iceland is one country neither my hubs or I have seen. Maybe one day. I can get annoyed when I make a mistake in a journal or on a calendar and have to cross something out. Makes me want to tear the page out and start over lol. I find a small yellow legal pad works well for me and a list. Have a great day!

    1. I'm the same when I make a mistake or my handwriting is too messy on a calendar or journal. It upsets me way more than it should. That's why I'm making the shift from fancy calendar journals to plain ol' notebooks.

  5. Hello Friend,
We had friends who traveled to Iceland last year. And you will not believe this, they did not see the northern lights!!! When they returned home to Wisconsin, we had a week of the northern lights.

    1. I'd be so disappointed to miss northern lights in Iceland! How ironic that your friends saw them once they were back home! It does depend on the time of year, I know. I saw them often when I lived in Canada, but it's been decades since the last time I saw them.

  6. See, now I like to over complicate everything so deciding where to start a year long vacation... that would take me months to plan out and decide! LOL.

    1. I think some things are good to over complicate because they are enjoyable to plan! Yes, it would also take me forever to over complicate and plan a world tour. LOL

  7. Planners way overcomplicate my days. It seems like so folks spend a lot (ALOT) of time just organizing their time (dates, etc.)! They are not for me. Nor is eating things that look back at me!! Ugh.

    1. Planners always seem like a good idea to me when I start out, and it's fun at the beginning, but then I wind up feeling like a failure when I don't follow through and I see the under-used pages of my beautiful calendar. :-(
Glad I'm not alone with some of my food rules!

Brown for a meal would only be for me because of CHOCOLATE! LOL

  10. I've always wanted to keep a paper calendar where different events are in different colors. It has NEVER worked for me. I keep most everything in a google calendar. I do have a paper calendar for work events (in addition to google calendar) and I keep a running list of daily "to-do's" in an old fashioned steno notebook. The color coded calendar is just too complicated for me haha! I love this quote: A well-developed sense of humor is the pole that adds balance to your steps as you walk the tightrope of life. ~William Arthur Ward! Thanks for sharing it with all of us!

    1. I do pretty good with my paper wall calendar and my google calendar. It's the daytimer journal type calendars that are just more than I can keep up with. I'm switching to the noteboook like you use.
I thought that quote was a very wise one - glad you enjoyed it!

  11. Yeay, another Chocolate Meal buddy!
I can totally relate to your Calendar dreams. I think it stems all the way back to grade school art class -- and even now, exacerbated by an essential tremor.

    1. Yay for chocolate meals! LOL
I can see how essential tremor would make that kind of calendar a bit of a challenge.
