WQ - New Year's Resolutions

Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right. ~Oprah Winfrey

Do you make New Year's Resolutions? It seems to me that many decide that resolutions aren't as effective as they'd like. Often our good intentions of what we want to change are unrealistic, or we run out of motivation and perseverance to follow through with our intentions. Still, it's a good practice to challenge ourselves to be better versions of ourselves as we turn the calendar to a new year, or really, at any time we see room for improvement.

Let each new year find you a better person. ~Benjamin Franklin

Dreams get you started; discipline keeps you going. ~Jim Rohn

When we once begin to form good resolutions, God gives us every opportunity of carrying them out. ~Saint John Chrysostom

Start out with an ideal and end up with a deal. ~Karl Albrecht

Resolution One: I will live for God. Resolution Two: If no one else does, I still will. ~Jonathan Edwards

The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul and a new nose; new feet, a new backbone, new ears, and new eyes. Unless a particular man made New Year resolutions, he would make no resolutions. Unless a man starts afresh about things, he will certainly do nothing effective. ~Gilbert K. Chesterton

I'm not entirely sure what Chesterton meant by having "a new nose" but he is absolutely right about us all needing a new soul and starting fresh if we hope to be better. Resolutions alone can't change us and won't make us good enough for heaven. There is only one way we can become good enough, and that is to trust in God and in the work of Jesus Christ, his only Son, to truly make us new. We've just celebrated the Christmas season, when we remember Jesus coming to earth as a baby, but the story doesn't end there. Jesus grew up and taught people how to live, performed miracles, healed many, made disciples, and preached the good news that God had come to live with his people. Jesus died a painful and humiliating death on a cross, was buried, and rose from the dead! Because he took the punishment for our sin, we can be made truly new and have the Holy Spirit with us always, helping us to do right and live well. And that's not just a New Year's Resolution, that's a profound and lasting change in our hearts and minds that enables us to keep our resolutions!

This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!
~II Corinthians 5:17~

For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
~Ephesians 2:10~

New Year's Resolution: To tolerate fools more gladly, provided this does not encourage them to take up more of my time. ~James Agate

  2. great quotes included. (Dreams get you started; discipline keeps you going. ~Jim Rohn) was a good one and similar to one I used. Ephesians 2:10 is a very wise verse that spoke to my heart. Thank you!
