WOTY and Goals - October Overview

Although I didn't get very far on my to-do lists in the month of October, I do think it turned out to be a good month in terms of me putting into practice what I wanted to, and getting some good results from  it. At the beginning of the month was our Scioto Valley Chorus show, so all the time spent practicing the music and choreography came together! We got a week off from rehearsals, but that didn't mean we could stop practicing, and I sure didn't. All the busy-ness of the month meant that I fell behind on many household tasks, but on the other hand, I had a method that worked to get me somewhat back on track and able to get prepared for when we had company or finally had a few evenings at home.

What I really need to practice now is some discipline and focus on better health. I need to eat better and get more exercise, and colder weather is going to make it hard to feel like it, I suspect.

Here's a brief recap of the month so far, along with some photos.

October 1-3 - Work, work work. On Friday we got pizza for dinner and watched Only Murders In The Building
Saturday, October 4 - I slept late, which was a treat! Ran out to the store for a few things after we had brunch. Hubby went to Lower Lights in the late afternoon but I stayed home to rehearse and do a bit of prep for the SVC show. Also phoned Mum and had a visit.

Sunday, October 5 - Went to church and played on worship team sort of like usual, but I left early to change and get to the show. Did my part in setting things up and prepping for show, and although I felt like we were in high gear looking after all the details, it wasn't as frantic as I'd feared. Once we were on stage, I thought it was a fantastic show!! After changing and packing everything down, I joined most of the chorus members for the afterglow at BJ's Brewhouse. When I finally got home and unpacked everything it did feel really good to just relax.

October 6 - Happy Monday! Back to work but we did have the night off from rehearsal!

October 7-10 - Busy work week, and on Friday evening I started baking for the weekend. Butter tarts and Impossible Squash Pie.

Saturday, October 11 - Cleaned house and prepped food all morning and early afternoon. Our guests arrived at about 5pm and we sat down to Thanksgiving dinner about 6pm. In my opinion, the smoked turkey didn't turn out quite as good as the one we did last year, but it was still delicious. We had such a lovely evening visiting with our friends!

Sunday, October 12 - When we arrived at church for worship team rehearsal, the door was still locked! Made for a funny photo. After church, we went out for lunch to Chi Thai with our worship director, and she came over to our place to visit just a little longer. Hubby played hockey later in the day, and we had a quiet evening.

October 13-15 - Work, rehearsal, phoned our boys for their birthdays.
October 16 - After work, I hurried home and we went to the Blue Jackets game.
October 17 - Work, dinner, and had to finish writing an article for the church newsletter.

Saturday, October 18 -  Wound up having a rather lazy morning. Our original plan was to go to Pumpkin Fest for Harrison's birthday, but Veronica wasn't feeling well so they stayed home. Hubby and I went to Blackhand Gorge and hiked a couple of the trails. We went over to the Diwali celebration in town right at the end of the evening, just for the fireworks.

Sunday, October 19 - After church, our 55+ lunch group ate at Mellow Mushroom. We had time to do a short regroup at home before Harrison and Angela and Veronica came over. We were celebrating Harrison's birthday together so we gave him his gift and went out to his restaurant choice which was Dewey's Pizza. Very good! It had rained a little all day, but was raining hard when we left restaurant so our goodbye was a quick one. After hockey, we called the Maryland kids in the evening, and then watched the Blue Jays game.

October 20 - No chorus rehearsal this week, so I worked late, then had a quick dinner and did a grocery shop in the evening. I listened to Blue Jays game (They are World Series bound - woo hoo!!) and talked to Kennady.
October 21 - Sweet Adelines International happened in Columbus this week, but I couldn't take time off work to attend. I subscribed to the webcast and watched the chorus semi-finals all day at work and all evening too.
October 22 - Watched quartet semi-finals all day at work, then went straight to church for the chili cookoff. I'd made a chorizo chili.
October 23 - Watched as much of the chorus finals as I could, and had a quiet evening.
October 24 - While at work, I watched quartet finals. I left work a little early so I could do a quick change at home and then get downtown for the Coronet Club show which was amazing!

Saturday, October 25 - Slept late as I usually do on Saturdays! We met Harrison and family at Freddy's for lunch then drove to Loveland to see the Loveland Castle. This was to celebrate Harrison and Angela's anniversary, and their choice for dinner was Ford's Garage.

Sunday, October 26 - A low-key Sunday, church in the morning, long nap in the afternoon, and catching up on Only Murders In The Building when hubby got home from hockey.

October 27 - Since we missed talking the previous week, my friend Connie and I had a visit in the morning as I drove to work. I went straight to chorus rehearsal after work since it was a coaching night. I listened to ball game on the way home, then stayed up waaaaaaay too late to watch to all the extra innings. Eighteen innings and the way it ended was obviously a huge disappointment for these Blue Jays fans!

October 28 - Yawned my way through work, and loved tonight's ballgame!
October 29-30 - We skipped FallFest at church, and we had one of our cars in the shop one day.

October 31 - Had to leave work a little early so we could meet our pastor and his wife and go to The Ohio State hockey game. The Buckeyes lost (Boo!) but it was a good game and a fun evening. We came home to watch the rest of the baseball game, which was also a loss - BOO!!!

My Word of the Year for 2025 is Practice. Put the things I've learned and that I know into practice. Practice doing what I know I should do and want to do. Practice how I want to perform. Practice―and get better at―the things that are important to me. Make a practice of healthy and beneficial habits and routines. In 2024, my WOTY was Rhythm, and one way I tried to establish a rhythm was by keeping a very brief daily diary, to watch for daily and weekly patterns to develop and to be intentional about keeping the good ones going. In 2025, I'll continue keeping the daily diary, but with a focus on how well I'm meeting my goals in the disciplines I'm practicing. See my WOTY post for 2025 for how I chose this word: Word of the Year 2025 - Practice.
