WOTY and Goals - August's Abundance

We were on vacation at the beginning of the month and with Labor Day falling on September 1st, the lastt weekend of August was also a holiday weekend. My husband also had some surgery the second week of August, so we had plenty going on to throw off the routines. I did my best to keep things on track during the weekdays, despite being much too hot and too tired to care very much most days! On the weekends, I admit I was just not too motivated to catch up on much. So once again, my attempts to practice all the good habits had mixed results.

Here's a brief recap of the month so far, along with some photos.

August 1 - Happy Anniversary to us! I got up early to have coffee with my boys, and later hubby and I made breakfast for the gang. (We were all at a vacation house in Deep Creek) We played some games and relaxed for awhile after cleaning up the kitchen. We all went to Swallow Falls and hiked the whole trail together. Back at the house we had naps and relaxed some more, then went out to dinner at Archie's BBQ. In the evening we had a birthday celebration (our granddaughter and our daughter's boyfriend have August birthdays), played some more games, and enjoyed the hot tub.

August 2 - Brunch was supplied by Harrison and Angela, and we got a later start to the day. Went to the nature center at Deep Creek Lake together, then went off in a couple of smaller groups to explore. We went to Oakland to the train museum and a couple shops, and had a late lunch at the Englander's lunch counter. Back to the house in the afternoon, where I hot tubbed with Landon and Meaghan while others napped or played games, then Landon and Meaghan got dinner ready for all of us. After dinner we went into town for a quick round of mini-golf, then had a bonfire and played games back at the house.

August 3 - Harrison and I got up early for a sunrise coffee together, but there wasn't much to see so it was back to bed for a bit. Packed up the house and went into town for breakfast at a donut place where we said our goodbyes and all headed home. Except me and hubs - we drove to Fallingwater and toured that, then checked into our hotel. We had dinner out and a relaxing evening.

August 4 - We grabbed coffee in town then drove out to Polymath Park and toured the Wright houses there. Headed home with a stop in Wheeling for dinner and a walk. Got home and I quickly freshened up and ran out to chorus rehearsal.

August 5-6 - Back to work, but not quite back to routine yet. I had catching up to do and I knew I'd be missing a day and a half later in the week.
August 7 - Hubby's surgery day. It was a long day at the hospital but thankfully all went well and he didn't need to spend the night. Obviously we had a quiet evening at home.
August 8 - I went to work late so I could make sure hubby was fine in the morning.
August 9 - He went to work for a little bit in the morning! You can't keep a good man down. In the afternoon I went to the SVC picnic and had lots of fun! I even won a cornhole set in our fundraiser auction!
August 10 - After church and lunch at home, Harrison and family came over and we had a swim (well, except hubby) and then had hot dogs and corn on the cob. We got out the new cornhole set and played a bit.

August 11-15 - Just work and nothing unusual.
August 16 - We went to Lancaster to the glass museum and then to O'Huid's Gaelic Pub for dinner. We meant to go for a walk in the evening but never got around to it. Getting out of practice when it comes to walking!

August 17 - We were back on the worship team at church this week! We went out for lunch with friends, then went home for a long nap. We did get out for a nice walk at twilight though.

August 18-19 - Chorus rehearsal on Monday night, and at work things started falling apart with some tech issues.
August 20-22 - Some really, really frustrating days at work! The accounting platform didn't work right and at least half of us couldn't access it because the workaround required a VPN. And it was a whole thing that took two complete days before we had that figured out. Such a mess. Ridiculous. The bright spot in these days was that Dinner + Discipleship is starting up at church again, so there was a game night on Wednesday. By Friday most of the tech issues at work were mostly sorted out, or at least we had working workaround (eyeroll) but I was still late getting home. We had a good steak dinner and watched The Fantastic Mr Fox at our daughter's recommendation.

August 23-24 - I welcomed the weekend by sleeping in! In the afternoon we met the kids at a metro park for the Bark Bash, and then went out for dinner together. Our Sunday was very laid back and quiet.

August 25 - It was a very Mondayish Monday at work, and not in a great way. I went straight to chorus from work, getting there early to set up ticketing for our fall show.
August 26-29 - Just the usual, work and D+D on Wednesday. On Thursday and Friday my car was in the shop.
August 30 - Got my hair cut in the morning, then rushed home to regroup and get to a watch party for the Buckeyes game. We met up with the kids at Glacier Ridge and explored for a bit before going to a nearby pub for dinner.

August 31 - Worship team at church, a luncheon reception following the service, then home for a long nap. We spent the evening at the Greek festival downtown, enjoying the music and the delicious food.

Opa!!

My Word of the Year for 2025 is Practice. Put the things I've learned and that I know into practice. Practice doing what I know I should do and want to do. Practice how I want to perform. Practice―and get better at―the things that are important to me. Make a practice of healthy and beneficial habits and routines. In 2024, my WOTY was Rhythm, and one way I tried to establish a rhythm was by keeping a very brief daily diary, to watch for daily and weekly patterns to develop and to be intentional about keeping the good ones going. In 2025, I'll continue keeping the daily diary, but with a focus on how well I'm meeting my goals in the disciplines I'm practicing. See my WOTY post for 2025 for how I chose this word: Word of the Year 2025 - Practice.

  1. Isn't it funny how we end a month not thinking we've done much, and then when you look back, you realize you did so much? I mean, that's me. I don't do a sentence a day because I'm just not that disciplined. Your vacation sounds wonderful with your family and then just the two of you. I'm glad your husband's surgery was successful. I'll send a prayer for a quick recovery.

    1. I have that experience many months when I do my recap, but I think we packed a lot into August! Starting and ending a month with long weekends makes it feel like we had a lot more vacation time too! Thanks for stopping by and commenting, and for you prayers.
