WQ - Hobbies

Make a commitment to having fun. See your best friends and make time for your hobbies and passions. ~Robert Holden

Everyone should have a deep-seated interest or hobby to enrich his mind, add zest to living, and perhaps, depending upon what it is, result in a service to his country. ~Dale Carnegie

Most of us would agree that enjoying a hobby or two during our leisure hours is good for us, makes us more well-rounded people and can improve our character. Many times our hobbies can eventually lead us to a career path or provide an alternative income, and can lead to friendships and community. Sports or health-related hobbies can help us improve our own health and fitness. It seems like there are lots of benefits, so I did some quick research and found the following list of possibilities:

*reduced stress and improved mood
*a sense of accomplishment and purpose, improved self-confidence
*better ability to manage or conquer anxiety or depression
*productive way to combat boredom and restlessness
*boost cognitive function and memory
*physical hobbies can improve heart health, weight maintenance, and fitness
*better sleep patterns
*friendships, community, relationships
*communication and social skills
*learning new skills and opportunity for personal growth

Our conscience, our faith, our local community, even our online hobby clubs - all civilize us. ~Amity Shlaes

To be really happy and really safe, one ought to have at least two or three hobbies, and they must all be real. ~Winston Churchill

I'm not sure what makes a hobby real as opposed to imaginary or unreal. I guess sometimes people will joke that their hobby is sleeping or daydreaming, or try to claim a hobby that isn't something they truly enjoy, and those might not be considered real. Gardening is a very popular hobby, but I don't enjoy it in the least, so if I tried to claim that was my hobby just to fit in, it wouldn't be real. It's a great hobby, but it's not for me.

You never lose a dream, it just incubates as a hobby. ~Larry Page

When I was growing up, I wanted to be a teacher. That was one of my dreams. I didn't get to do it as my career, but as a homeschooler, it did become a hobby that I was quite passionate about. And while it wasn't a big money-maker, my hobby of researching curricula, developing lesson plans, and being interested in all things related to writing, communicating, and grammar led to a very rewarding gig as a tutor.

Really think hard about what you want to do, because when you're doing what you want to do is probably when you'll be doing your best. And pray it is not a hobby so they'll pay you for it. ~Rush Limbaugh

I don't have hobbies; hobbies cost money. Interests are quite free. ~George Carlin

I loved this very wise piece of advice that I will try to remember:

When you meet someone, ask about what hobby they have, not what they do. People always ask me about cooking, but I prefer to talk about tennis or boxing. ~Wolfgang Puck

What are your hobbies and how have they improved your life? Leave a comment and let me know!

Just for fun, I'll close with this:

I guess I need a hobby. Currently my primary hobby is complaining. ~Jay Duplass

Quoting reminds me there are other people in the world besides only me.
And other thoughts besides mine, and other ways of thinking.

    1. Oh I tried my hand at pressing flowers some years ago and enjoyed it! Obviously I didn't keep it up, but what a great hobby, and I bet it brings you joy as well as those who receive the gifts you make. :-) Thanks for stopping by and sharing!

  3. Those quotes are great! Right now, my hobbies have fallen to the wayside due to time constraints. I do still love to read and I read while I'm on the stationary bike, so I get a few minutes of a loved activity in most every day.
