I don't know for sure when the last day of school is, but I do know that it's soon, and with Memorial Day just a couple weeks away, the summer vacation season will soon be here. In North America anyway, the long weekend at the end of May is seen as the beginning of summer and most of us are thinking ahead to the getaways we have planned or that we should get started planning! So what makes a good vacation? Which vacations are the most memorable?
Our family vacations weren't to exotic locations, or even off the continent, but I think we did a pretty good job of making good vacation memories. One thing we did that I thought worked out very well was allowing each of our kids to choose a family vacation destination for the summer following their graduation. Harrison took us all to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Cedar Point. Spencer wanted to visit my family in Alberta and we took the opportunity to add a few days at Glacier National Park. Landon wanted to go back to Cedar Point, and also attend baseball games, so we saw games in Columbus, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Toronto. Kennady requested visits to conservatories so we went to Franklin Conservatory in Columbus, the Phipps in Pittsburgh, and made day trips to Longwood Gardns, the Botanical Gardens in DC and the conservatory in Baltimore. Build traditions of family vacations and trips and outings. These memories will never be forgotten by your children. ~Ezra Taft Benson
It isn't how much time you spend somewhere that makes it memorable: it's how you spend the time. ~David Brenner
A vacation spot out of season always has a very special magic. ~Max von Sydow
We've found this to be true as well. We took the kids to Disney World several times, and never during the busiest tourist season. Disney is always crowded, of course, but it was less so when we were there and were we ever glad! We also had a late fall vacation to Florida that didn't include Disney, but did include St Augustine, Daytona Beach, Miami, the Everglades, and the Keys. The days we were in the Daytona Beach area were definitely out of season. The hotel pool was closed and it was pretty brisk out on the beach, but on the plus side, we had the place pretty much to ourselves.
A Florida vacation with Kennady in September was off season for Disney, which was nice, but it was also pre-season for the NHL so we got to see a game in Tampa.

This post brings back memories for me. We lived fairly close to Cedar Point (about 3 hours away) and went there every summer for several years. And, I just remembered that was where we spent our honeymoon as we both started new jobs on the Monday after we got married! I love the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but I haven't been there in several years. Our last family vacation (though we didn't know it at the time) was to San Diego. We didn't know it was the week before the Republican Convention! Luckily, it only created a problem on our last day. Everything was closing down early in order to set up for the convention. President HW Bush's yacht was parked in the marina right outside our hotel room, but we didn't see him.

We loved Cedar Point and are thinking it might be our family get-together location for next summer. Too early to decide though! The R&R Hall of Fame was so interesting and fun.
DeleteWhat an interesting turn of events for your San Diego vacation! Glad it didn't create issues other than your last day - wouldn't it have been interesting if you'd been able to meet Bush or some of the 'big players'? Maybe. We actually had the Glacier portion of our second son's trip cut short because that was right when the government shut down in October 2013 so the National Park was closed. Boo.
