Collecting My Thoughts for the Hodgepodge

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1.  What's something you're curious about right now?

So many things . . . what family members are busy with, whether my sister received the birthday card I sent her, why my ankle is still so stiff and sore and if I should do anything about it, how much my dental work will cost, how to find a good realtor . . . And I usually have what my friend and I call a "Bible noodle" that I'm curious about. Today's is not specific to the Bible, but came about after a conversation after Bible study tonight. We were talking about a very slow growing desert tree and that Abraham had planted one, and we wondered where he got the starter. Did he root it from a mature tree, or grow it from seed?

2. If you could plan the perfect girls' weekend getaway, where would you go and what would be on the agenda? Do you have anything like this on your calendar in the next few months?

I wish I had a girls weekend on my calendar! I can think of a couple different kinds that would be so fun. I have a group of online friends that has been very close-knit and supportive for many years, and we have often talked about how fun it would be to all meet up at a place like Pigeon Forge for a weekend. We have yet to do it, but I hope someday we will! I would also love to be able to get away with my closest friends from Maryland. With those gals, we'd probably get a beach house for a couple days. In either case, I'm not sure we'd need to have much on the agenda. I think it would be perfect to have mostly unstructured time to just hike or sit on a porch or at the beach together, enjoying each other's company without the pressure of needing to be at work or whatever. I've also started thinking about whether someday I could plan a weekend trip with my daughter and daughters-in-law.

 3. What's the most unique item in your refrigerator right now?

I'm almost positive there's a couple things that should have been tossed awhile ago, and those containers might have a uniquely nasty smell if I opened them. Yuck. This is a reminder to me to clean the fridge out tomorrow. But as far as an actual food item that is somewhat unique . . . a jar of Yum-Yum sauce? A block of Queso de Freir? I think that's the best I can do.

4. In this season of your life, what do you find most challenging?

I find it challenging to keep my energy level up and my attitude positive. I like my job well enough, but I find it exhausting and discouraging when I think about the monotony of this whole work thing. Day after day, week after week, month after month, doing the same thing and just hoping to make it to the next weekend or the next vacation, and sometimes giving in to the temptation to just feel sorry for myself because this isn't how I pictured this season of life.

Related thought - it occurred to me a couple days ago that I kind of have this idea that whenever we move to a house, I'll somehow have more time. That all the things I struggle to find time for will be easier when I live in a different house. Why on earth would I think that? It's highly unlikely that we'll move to a place where my work commute will be significantly different, so where will this time come from? Now that I've identified that weird illogical mindset, I guess I'll have to correct it somehow.

 5.  Do you collect anything? If so, why that?

I guess it's fair to say I collect coffee mugs. For many years, I requested the annual Tim Horton's ceramic mug for Christmas or my birthday and I have quite a few. I also like Starbucks mugs, and just interesting mugs in general. And since I love coffee, mugs are very appropriate for me to collect! My husband says I have too many, but I think he is wrong. I just don't have a large enough mug rack for my collection is all.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Often my Hodgepodge doesn't get posted or linked until late on Wednesday, and today is one of those weeks. Guess that's kind of what I meant in my answer about what I find challenging, and my thoughts about when I'll have more time. Oh well. Some weeks I'm more on top of it than others - this is not one of them!

One reason I'm sometimes late with the Hodgepodge is that every other Wednesday i co-host the Wednesday Quotes link-up. This morning I posted my quotes and thoughts on our theme of Memorable Vacations. You're invited to read it and to join in at WQ - Memorable Vacations.

What are you collecting, besides your Hodgepodge answers? What are you curious about? Leave a comment and let me know!

  2. I can feel and understand your frustration with work and time and figuring it all out. I hope you find a solution that brings you peace. I love the 'stop buying mugs' mug. There is something about a cute coffee mug that's hard to resist. And I can be weirdly sentimental about them so they're hard to part with. Hope you have a nice day!

    1. It's very hard to resist a cute or clever mug, and especially now that I've got so many Tim Horton's mugs, I want ALL of them. LOL I'm also sentimental about it. Thanks for stopping by and sympathizing with my mug obsession!

  4. I don't drink coffee, but I love fun mugs! My husband does drink coffee, but just wants a big mug. I love how you were thinking about the scripture and how the tree came to be! Mark and I were discussing Rahab because I taught about her on Sunday in our Sunday School class. He was wondering who her husband, Salmon, was -- in the lineage of Jesus. We googled it and just read several "thoughts" about him. Some say he may have been one of the spies she hid! No one seems to know for sure other than they married and had Boaz. When I'm teaching, I always say I want more info - like your tree thoughts!

    1. My daughter doesn't drink coffee but she also collects mugs. I've always wondered about whether Salmon was actually one of the spies. It would kind of make sense, and what a neat story that would be! One I want to hear when I meet them in heaven. ;-) Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  5. I love your mug collection! I don't collect them per se but I do have quite a few and I sometimes pick them up as a souvenir. Your husband's message is funny! I don't work full time but my husband does and I know it's weary for him. He works about fifty weeks a year (the two weeks off include the major holidays- he takes less than a week's worth of his own days off) and he's done that since law school. I don't see how he does it day after day, week after week, etc. With just working part time hours, I find it's hard to get everything done that I want to. I hope that you have a great weekend!

    1. I'm so glad I didn't feel pressure to work full time once we started our family. I have a lot of mixed feelings about it now, because I don't HAVE TO work full time, but it was important to me to work part time so it was like, "well why not get the benefits etc?" I just wish it was more flexible with hours and taking time off. Oh well. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
