Making Space for the Hodgepodge

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1.  The Hodgepodge lands on National Picnic Day . . . will you celebrate? Do you enjoy picnics? Dining out of doors picnic or otherwise? What are three or four things I'd find in your picnic basket?

I don't think we'll celebrate National Picnic Day - at least we won't today! I think it's still a little early in the spring for picnics where we live, because the weather is still quite changeable. In general I enjoy picnics, and prefer them outdoors. I used to have a wonderful wicker picnic basket complete with bright colored plastic dinnerware, but that was a long time ago. Nowadays, my picnic basket is most likely to contain chicken salad, some kind of sandwiches, and lots of napkins!

2. A time recently where you felt 'antsy'?

I can't think of a specific occasion, but there have been quite a few days over the past couple weeks where I've been especially fidgety and uncomfortable while at work and while driving. I chalk it up to being tired and feeling like it's a struggle to concentrate or even stay awake, and when I'm driving that worry that I'm overtired definitely makes me antsy!

 3. As the saying goes . . . 'when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.' Do you like lemonade? When did you recently need to make lemonade out of lemons, figuratively speaking?

I really like lemonade, but because it's acidic I don't drink it often. My favorite is raspberry lemonade. I guess I look at our current housing situation as making lemonade out of lemons. We're renting, which I'm not a fan of, but there's some benefits. We had hoped to be working with a realtor and looking for something to buy this spring, but the timing has not worked at all, so we will be signing another lease renewal. That's very lemony to me, because I'd really wanted my own place this year, but the lemonade is that we will have plenty of time to look and plan, so we won't be rushed. And maybe the interest rates will come down too!

4. Recently five 'celebrities' made a brief (11 minute) foray into space aboard Jeff Bezos Blue Origin rocket. Did you hear about this? Your thoughts? If money were no object is this something you'd like to do someday?

Oh I definitely heard about it and thought it was absolutely ridiculous that they presented it like it was some amazing space exploration. It was a thrill ride and those women didn't do a single thing to advance women in STEM or human knowledge or anything else of any value. I might have appreciated it more if they didn't try to make it into more than the publicity stunt that it actually was. Would I do it? Not a chance. As much as I love rollercoasters and almost any thrill ride, skydiving has always been a hard NO for me, so I'd definitely not want to be flung up into the atmosphere in a tin yurt with a parachute. Nope.

5.  Favorite thing about the 'space' you're sitting in right now?

At the moment, my favorite thing is that I'm here relaxed and unrushed as I'm not going to work today. I'm in our second bedroom which is sort of an office space and sitting room, and functions as a guest bedroom. When it's tidied up, it's pretty comfortable. I admit it's not completely tidy right now as I've left the ironing draped over the back of the sofa, and my purse, work bag, and a bunch of books and papers I need to sort are spread out on the sofa too.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I'm having a week. I'm having a colonoscopy today - yay for having enough birthdays that I need to do that every so often - so the prep is not much fun. So Monday night I'm enjoying my "last supper" of solid food for a couple of days, and a filling came right out of my tooth! Not even like I was eating anything crunchy or sticky either. I guess I've also had enough birthdays that the fillings I got in my late teens are all reaching their expiration dates. Well, that necessitated me finding a dentist right quick, so that's coming up on Monday. Then yesterday morning when I left the house to go to work, I managed to trip and went down hard on the sidewalk. I'm shocked that I didn't break anything or even bloody my knees, but I certainly was shaken up and expect some bruises to form. I am sore all over today, not just my bruised knees and elbows, but my wrist and shoulder that were jarred by the fall . . . but I can't take any pain meds until after the procedure. So that's fun.

But I do have today off work, which is actually kind of nice.

  1. Yes, it still feels quite early for picnics here too but I do like them later on in the year if the bus stay away.
I hope you get to get your own place soon but at least it gives you time to plan and find the perfect place.
I hope the colonoscopy goes well, the tooth gets repaired easily and ouch to the trip onto the sidewalk. They say things come in three's so hopefully that is it for now.

  2. So sorry about your fall. I feel extra cautious and fragile since tripping and breaking my elbow a couple of years ago. I agree the prep is just the worst. I won't need another for several years now and hope they come up with some new and improved process. The procedure is nothing but a nice nap but the prep is awful. Hope all went well!

    1. It went well and I won't have to do it for another 10 years so that was good news. Yes, I'm also more cautious and careful in an effort to not fall, but I sure failed yesterday! It takes a lot longer to recover from a stumble now than when I was a kid. Thanks for stopping by and for the well-wishes!

  3. Oh that tin yurt line made me laugh! I am so sorry to hear that you have had quite the week; hopefully your bruises won't be too bad or long lasting. I am such a klutz and while I've always been that way I am so much more aware of it now as those bumps, bruises, and falls seem to hurt so much more.

    1. Surprisingly I haven't got any black and blue bruises, but after my visit with the doctor this morning, confirmed that there's deep tissue bruising, especially on my artificial knee. Yeah, as I get older, every clumsy move is that much riskier and I feel every bump and trip longer. Sigh. Sorry you're having those kinds of experiences too! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  5. Sorry about your fall and your other procedures that require medical and/or dental insurance, pain, and healing time. Not fun. I can see how renewing your least would be frustrating. We have good friends who rented for years as they had to relocate to Connecticut for work and they knew they didn't want to end up there for good so they rented which was crazy expensive. They came back to Ohio, rented for a year, and then found a really good deal on a beautiful new build that is perfect for them. But they rented for years and worried they'd never find a wonderful forever home. Hoping you get in your dream home one day!

    1. That was our thinking when we moved to Ohio - rent until we decided whether we were going to stay. Well, the longer we wait, the shorter the time is until we retire and will we stay here after that? Who knows?! Hopefully by this time next year we'll be in a house we like a lot better! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  6. Oh my, you really have had a week. Here's to the days ahead going much calmer. "That's very lemony" you said about renting again...but I did think the way you described it was cute! Make some lemonade:)
