Tell Us About . . . Hometowns: People and Places To Love

How interesting that the theme for this month is hometowns, when I recently went to visit my original hometown. I started thinking about what makes a place a home town, if it's possible to have more than one, and how much that place can affect or define someone.

Most people consider the place where they grew up to be their hometown. The place where they spent the majority of their childhood and teen years. My hometown, by that definition, is Calgary, Alberta. That's where I was born, and where I grew up and lived until my mid-twenties. I had temporary addresses in Manitoba and Ontario for about a year, but Calgary was clearly my home.

Sometimes we don't appreciate our hometown until we don't live there any more and we start to realize what we miss about it. I missed my family and my friends when I moved away, but it took a little longer to miss the surroundings. When I was able to return home for visits, I was struck by things that I wouldn't necessarily have expected. The sky is bigger and there is more horizon in Alberta than in New Jersey or Maryland or Ohio. I can't explain that, but I have observed it. Being able to see the mountains off to the west. And being able to visit the mountains pretty much any time you want. I really miss that!

There's something that happens to you when you come back to your hometown. ~Joseph Dougherty

Driving by the house I grew up in, the schools I attended, the church we attended, and various buildings and landmarks was a fun trip down memory lane, and while all of those places were part of my hometown experience, I don't miss them in the same way. The house was sold a couple decades ago, the schools look the same but I don't have any connection any more, and the congregation I was part of changed buildings and names and I hardly know anyone; and the building was sold to a different congregation. There are many memories attached to the places, so it's nostalgic to drive around the neighborhoods and remember when we lived and worked and played there. But I can't say that I long for those days, or wish we could move back. I desperately wish we weren't so far away from my family and the good friends that we reconnected with, and I also wish it was easier to go visit the mountains more often, but I don't wish to move back.

Many years ago my hometown shifted to our community in Maryland. We lived there for twenty-five years and raised our family there. We had a house that we'd made truly ours over those years. We built deep friendships in the homeschool community and in the church where we very involved. The roots had gone pretty deep over those years, and it was home. In a very real sense, it is still home, because our house is still there and our adult kids still live in the house. When we moved to Ohio, I knew I would desperately miss the kids and granddaughter, and would miss all my friends. And I sure did. I miss my house too. I miss the homeschool co-op where I taught, and I miss being involved in lots of social things at church, and I miss the drive through the country to get to town.

Towns change; they grow or diminish, but hometowns remain as we left them. ~Jayne Anne Phillips

I don't know how long it will take for me to really feel like Columbus is my hometown. In theory, it already is, because it's our address and we're trying to put down some roots here. We're involved in church, we have jobs we like, and I'm part of a chorus that gives me a sense of belonging. We're starting to make friends. We enjoy exploring the area and getting to know the parks and restaurants and entertainment. We love being close to our oldest son and his family. But there's something that still feels temporary, and maybe it's just because we're renting instead of buying. This is home but it's not exactly HOME yet.

It's becoming home, and becoming a hometown. And I think it's okay to just add another hometown. I don't have to give up my hometown connections to Calgary or to Maryland in order to establish a hometown connection here. My kids won't have an emotional connection to this place because they didn't grow up here, but hopefully we can make some good memories when they come to visit, and my grandchildren will have lots of good memories of going to Nonny and Poppy's house.

Hometown looks a little different now than what I pictured just a couple of years ago. And that's going to have to be okay.

Where we love is home - home that our feet may leave, but not our hearts. ~Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr.

Tell Us About . . . is a monthly opportunity for bloggers to showcase their creativity. Each month one of the co-hosts will choose the word to focus on. On the third Thursday of every month we'll respond to the prompt "Tell Us About ---" which could be absolutely anything. And how we respond is also wide open. It could be a blog post with our opinions or reminscences; a poem, photos, a short story or whatever takes your fancy―it could even be a mix of all these! This month's theme is "Home Towns" and our hostess is Marsha In The Middle.

Everyday Images #20

Welcome to another installment of my challenge and reminder to myself to take photos somewhat regularly. I went through past photo challenges and came up with a list of prompts at the beginning of the year and am trying to find opportunities to take pictures of these things each week. These were the prompts I assigned myself for the past couple weeks:

October Prompts - Everyday Images #20
~~~~~
weather (quarterly)
door
orange
inside and/or outside
texture
table
~~~~~

weather (quarterly) - This is pretty typical of the past little while, and typical of the season. It's cooler, especially at night, and while we still have the occasional day with a bright blue sky that reminds me of September, more often the skies are cloudy and there's a bit of rain.

door -

orange - Jack-o-lanterns at the Columbus Zoo

inside and/or outside - This was inside the sea lion exhibit at the Columbus Zoo. You're surrounded by water above and below, but can see the sky. And the next photo is my granddaughter (in her Spider Gwen costume, because it was Boo at the Zoo) getting a feel for being inside the aquarium at the bubble window.

texture -

table - Yes, I know, very similar to my "same spot monthly" photos! But this was different because the table was set for our Canadian Thanksgiving celebration.

And a few bonus photos:

A couple of  treasures I brought back from our trip to visit my parents. My grandpa carved and painted these many decades ago.

We went to Star Wars night at the Columbus Blue Jackets. No idea why that was the promotion but it was fun, and we got these cool Star Wars jerseys. I got to see my Calgary Flames play, which is why we chose this game.

And a few more Columbus Zoo photos:

I am sharing my photos every other Tuesday, along with my prompts for the next two weeks. You can use all or some of the prompts for your own photo posts, or none of the prompts and just link up a post featuring your photos. Simple rules: Your posts must be family-friendly; the photos must be your own; and the post must be mostly photos. If you do share I'd appreciate a mention and link to A Fresh Cup of Coffee on your post.

Scripture and a Snapshot - Shout Aloud and Sing for Joy

In that day you will say:

"I will praise you, LORD.
Although you were angry with me,
your anger has turned away
and you have comforted me.
Surely God is my salvation;
I will trust and not be afraid.
The LORD, the LORD himself,
is my strength and my defense;
he has become my salvation."
With joy you will draw water
from the wells of salvation.

In that day you will say:

"Give praise to the LORD, proclaim his name;
make known among the nations what he has done,
and proclaim that his name is exalted.
Sing to the LORD, for he has done glorious thins;
let this be known to all the world.
Shout aloud and sing for joy, people of Zion,
for great is the Holy One of Israel among you."

~Isaiah 12~

Five Minute Friday - Clarify

This post may contain affiliate links - using affiliate links from A Fresh Cup of Coffee helps continue the coffee breaks and conversation.

One word. Five minutes to write about it. This is the idea behind Five Minute Friday and this is today's free-writing post.

let me clarify

********************
When someone says, "Let me clarify," what's really going on? I thought about my reaction to hearing those words and I think my response is usually related to my opinion of the person saying it. Some people I assume are going to further explain a statement or situation. Maybe even moderate or qualify an earlier statement that was too general or poorly worded. And there are some people who would say they wanted to clarify a statement, and my gut reaction would be that they are trying to squirm around a lie, or that the clarification they're about to offer will actually make things murkier instead of clearer.

No matter what my reaction, the information is already out there, and the clarification I need is what to do with information. How to interpret it correctly, what action I might need to take once I understand the information, or how I need to apply that knowledge practically. It's what we often call wisdom or discernment.

And boy, do we need it in the world today! There's lots of information and plenty of statements of facts and opinions on all kinds of topics available. We need clarity on what is reliable and what is important; what is true and what is not, what things are factual or non-negotiable and what things are personal preference and opinion. We also need clarity on how to respond and make decisions. We need wisdom and discernment.

More important than the quest for certainty is the quest for clarity. ~ Francois Gautier

Thankfully, even though there is confusion and muddiness all around us, God has given us his Word and the Holy Spirit to guide us and give us the wisdom and stability we need. When we decide to listen to what God is saying, and ask him to help us understand, he will clarify the meaning of Scripture to us and help us discern what is right and good.

Let those who are wise understand these things.
Let those with discernment listen carefully.
The paths of the LORD are true and right,
and righteous people live by walking in them.
But in those paths sinners stumble and fall.
~Hosea 14:9~

Give discernment to me, your servant;
then I will understand your laws.
~Psalm 119:125~

We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand. . . But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
~Hebrews 5:11, 14~

You see, the information is all there for us. If we'll take the time to pray and study and think - and to listen to the Holy Spirit - God will clarify all that we need to know and we'll be training ourselves in discernment.
