Share Four Somethings - March 2023

This post may contain affiliate links - using affiliate links from A Fresh Cup of Coffee helps continue the coffee breaks and conversation.

 Is it just me, or does March seem super long? It must be something to do with February being a short month, and Easter not coming until April this year. It feels like March has lasted forever and there's still another whole week to go! But it is the last Saturday and so it's time to share Something I Loved, Something I Read, Something I Learned and Something I Ate. I finished my morning coffee hours ago, but I'm hoping that maybe a trip to a local coffee shop might be possible later today. Planning on that for tomorrow for sure!

Something Loved

I found a chorus that I'm going to join (assuming the plan works out!) and although I've just attended two rehearsals, I'm very excited about it and love the idea of singing and performing with such a talented and fun group! The group is a Sweet Adelines International chorus, so that's something a little different from choruses I've sung with before. (Sweet Adelines is women's barbershop harmony singing, for those who may not be familiar with the organization.) I visited for the first time about two weeks ago at their rehearsal, and it was a welcoming atmosphere right from the start, even though they were working hard preparing for a regional competition performance. Last week I attended what was essentially the dress rehearsal for the performance, so that was a chance to watch and listen rather than participate. But I'm working on learning the current pieces so I'll hopefully not feel too terribly out of place on the risers starting next week, and be ready to officially audition and become a full member at the beginning of May.

Something Read

Among all the things I read this month, I want to highlight that I re-read the stories about Abraham in Genesis pretty carefully! That was inspired by my being able to watch and review the new movie His Only Son, which is about God calling Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac. If you can go see it in theaters, please do. It is so good! You can read my full review here: His Only Son - Movie Review and Giveaway

Here are the books I'm currently reading:

A Perilous Perspective by Anna Lee Huber

The novels are both very good, and I'm getting close to finished Hollythorne House. I have another review novel to get going with the moment I've finished too. I had just started the book about music when a friend gifted me the book about moving, and the new book quickly became my priority read because it's really timely and much needed!

The rest of my reading news is at Just A Second if you want to see what I've recently reviewed and what I have coming up.

Something Learned

Well, I've learned some interesting things about income taxes and tax preparation. That was not necessarily fun or uplifting to learn.

Something much more fun to learn is the music for the chorus! It's not just learning my part, but memorizing it, and there will be choreography to learn too. Talk about keeping my brain active!

I've also been watching more of the PragerU videos―I especially like the five-minute ones―and usually learn something new from them. If it's not brand new information, it's almost always a new perspective on the information. I thought this one was really good: Why You Should Care About Passover

Something On My Plate

I am so bad at remembering to take photos of food! Sometimes I'll try a new recipe and it turns out great, but I failed to take a picture of that goodness so I can brag about it!

Here's one I tried that I did photograph―Creamy Cubano Soup (I got the recipe from The Happy Wonderer), which I think will be reappearing on our menu regularly. It was so good!

Other new recipes this month included: Crispy Cheddar Chicken, Crispy Baked Cod, and a Kentucky Hot Brown Bake. The chicken and cod were excellent, and the Hot Brown was very good, but maybe needs a bit of tweaking.

Highlights from my standards on the menu this month were: Fettucine Alfredo, Pesto Bread, and Cheeseburger Sliders.

Just because I didn't have kids around didn't mean I wasn't going to enjoy my annual treat of Lucky Charms for St. Patrick's Day! We did also have corned beef for dinner, but it didn't turn out quite as good this time for some reason.

My husband and I love barbecue and like exploring new barbecue joints. We tried Dirty Dawgs a couple weeks ago and it was super. Probably our new favorite for barbecue.

And I got to go out for lunch with my oldest son on Monday, so we chose Skyline Chili. I'd never eaten at a Skyline Chili restaurant before, but I really like Skyline-style chili. He and I are the chili lovers in the Ohio branch of our family. My husband likes it but doesn't particularly care for skyline-style; and my daughter-in-law doesn't care for chili in general.

Did you try anything new in March? Share something in the comments, or share four somethings with the rest of us in the link party!

Five Minute Friday - Follow

This post may contain affiliate links - using affiliate links from A Fresh Cup of Coffee helps continue the coffee breaks and conversation.

One word. Five minutes to write about it. This is the idea behind Five Minute Friday and this is today's free-writing post.

follow the leader
follow your heart

********************
For all its accolades and celebrated recognition as sound guidance, I have personally noticed that sometimes, 'follow your heart,' is really bad advice. ~Steve Maraboli

"Follow your heart" is really popular advice and you can find thousands of quotes saying that you should always follow your heart, and assuring you that you'll never go wrong if you do. It's a hugely popular theme in music and movies - just follow your heart! But it's not always good advice. In fact, sometimes it's horrible advice, depending on what definition of heart we're following.

Most people today think of their heart as where their emotions and dreams come from. Where romantic love comes from. All the feelings. While it may usually be a good thing for us to pursue a career path that is something we're passionate about, and it's often good to listen to our gut or instinct, it can be incredibly foolish to be ruled by our emotions and feelings.

Don't let your hopes or fears come between you and Jesus; follow hard after Him. He will never fail you. ~Charles Spurgeon

To the Bible writers, the heart was not so much about love and emotions, but more about decision making and thought processes. And there are lots of Scripture passages warning against following our own ideas and feelings. God instructed the Israelites to put tassels on their clothes as reminders to be obedient to him and not to follow their own hearts.

You must have this tassel so that you may look at it and remember all the commandments of the LORD and obey them and so that you do not follow after your own heart and your own eyes that lead you to unfaithfulness.
~Numbers 15:39~

The one who trusts in his own heart is a fool,
but the one who walks in wisdom will escape.
~Proverbs 28:26~

What does the Bible tell us to follow? Time and again, the instructions are to follow God's commands and to follow Jesus.

It is the LORD your God you must follow, and him you must revere. Keep his commands and obey him; serve him and hold fast to him.
~Deuteronomy 13:4~

Carefully follow the terms of this covenant, so that you may prosper in everything you do.
~Deuteronomy 29:9~

"Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him."
~John 12:25-26~

Don't follow your heart. God did not design our hearts to be followed, but to be led. ~Jon Bloom

We are always much better off following our leader, Jesus. He created our hearts and minds, gives us hopes and dreams that he wants us to pursue and fulfill by living life his way. When we get our hearts lined up with him, we will find joy and happiness. If our hearts follow Jesus, that's when we can follow our hearts. When Jesus says, "Follow me," we can trust that he knows exactly where he's going to take us, and it will be good, and it will be for our good.

"My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand."
~John 10:27-28~

Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.
~I Corinthians 11:1~

The world says love yourself, grab all you can, follow your heart. Jesus says deny yourself, grab your cross and follow me. ~Francis Chan

His Only Son - Movie Review and Giveaway #HisOnlySonMIN

This post may contain affiliate links - using affiliate links from A Fresh Cup of Coffee helps continue the coffee breaks and conversation.

His Only Son, a new movie from  Angel Studios (makers of The Chosen) is coming to theaters starting March 31, 2023. This powerful movie explores the Biblical story of Abraham and his son Isaac. The story in Genesis tells about God speaking to Abraham and promising to make him the father of nations and bless him, and after many years of waiting, Abraham and his wife Sarah finally have a son of their own. But God then calls on Abraham to sacrifice this promised and beloved son.

Make plans today to see HIS ONLY SON in theaters March 31st! Buy tickets at: HisOnlySonMovie.com.

"After being called on by the Lord, Abraham's faith is tested on his three day journey to sacrifice his son."

Synopsis:  His Only Son recounts one of the most controversial moments in the Old Testament―when Abraham was commanded by God to sacrifice his son Isaac on the mountain of Moriah. While traveling to the place of the sacrifice, alongside Isaac and two servants, Abraham is flooded with vivid memories from the years he and Sarah spent longing for the son they were promised―the son he must now lay upon the altar.

My thoughts:  Although the movie essentially begins at the point where God calls Abraham and tells him to give Isaac as a sacrifice, it also lays all the background in a series of memories and flashbacks, so viewers are introduced to Abraham and Sarah in their younger years when God first spoke to Abraham about moving to a new land that God would show him. More memories add to the story of their years of longing for a child and Sarah wondering how God would keep his promises to her husband when she still couldn't get pregnant. Sarah's struggle to understand Abraham's faith in a God that she didn't know and her growing bitterness when she is well past her childbearing years and the promised child still hasn't come is portrayed poignantly.

Isaac's birth to a couple so old brings new life to Sarah and Abraham, and Sarah finds great joy in her son. So how do you think she reacted when Abraham insisted that Isaac was to go along on this journey through the wilderness to sacrifice to God? Don't you think she'd be worried about her elderly husband on this trip as well? What did the servants who accompanied Abraham and Isaac think about the whole situation? What about Isaac himself? I thought the movie did an excellent job of portraying some of the likely actions and reactions, and invited viewers along on the emotional journey as well.

I loved how Isaac's personality was shown, as a kind and generous young man, willing to go out of his way to rescue lost sheep and ready to give up his freedom to save a captive. But what would he do when told that he was to be the sacrifice?

The imagery and language also drew all the appropriate parallels between Abraham's call to give up his only son, and God's plan to sacrifice his only son two thousand years later. The connection to the death and resurrection of Jesus is clear and compelling, so it's just perfect that this movie will be in theaters just before the Easter season.

After my husband and I watched the movie, he remarked that he had expected it to be an Easter movie, a movie about Jesus Christ dying in our place. And in a sense, it is. It points the way to Jesus the Messiah, to his death and resurrection, and helps us understand the greatness of that sacrifice and that gift to us. I hope you'll go see the movie, and I pray you'll be blessed by it.

Wednesday Hodgepodge - Thoughts on Goof Off Day

This post may contain affiliate links - using affiliate links from A Fresh Cup of Coffee helps continue the coffee breaks and conversation.

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1. Did you celebrate St. Patrick's Day in some way? If so, tell us how. Are you a fan of corned beef? Cabbage? The color green?

I guess we didn't really celebrate St. Patrick's Day. It's not really the same without the kids around―even the big kids! I bought Lucky Charms as a treat for my breakfasts during the week, and we had Irish coffee. That's about it! I really like corned beef, but most of the rest of the family does not. My husband is okay with it, so I made that for our Sunday dinner. I do not like cabbage at all! I do like the color green, but not to wear―more for decorating.

Our granddaughter made a leprechaun trap and I cannot believe she didn't catch one!

2. March 22nd is National Goof Off Day . . . will you celebrate? Your favorite way to goof off? Last time you had a whole day to spend 'goofing off'?

Oh my, like I need a national day to goof off! If the definition of goofing off is just wasting time doing something silly, I do it every day. I goof off with word puzzles or games on my phone way too often, so I think those are my favorite way to goof off. I don't think I've had a whole day to goof off since a vacation. Or maybe one of the days I was home alone recovering after my knee replacement.

3. Something on your to-do list that has been there more than a month? Will this be the month you finally cross it off?

 There are lots of things on the list that I've been putting off for one reason or another! Biggest or most important is getting our drivers licenses, vehicle tags and registration, and auto insurance updated to Ohio instead of Maryland. We should have been able to do this in January, but with one thing and another we kept putting it off. And YES. I am going on record that this will get done in March. It really has to!

4. In your opinion, what emotion is the most beneficial? Which one is the least useful?

 I bet as I read others' answers, I will second guess my own, but I think the most beneficial emotion might be enthusiasm. It's that spark of positive energy that helps motivate me to get things done and improves my attitude, helps me find joy in doing ho-hum things and adds passion to things I already enjoy.

The least useful emotion might be guilt. Feeling guilty about something usually means there's nothing that can be done about something that's happened in the past and if you just stew in it you're not accepting forgiveness and not learning anything from the experience. Just wallowing in self-loathing or bitterness, which is no good.

5. What was your favorite thing to do as a kid? Elaborate.

Goof off?! I guess probably playing any kind of pretend. I had an active imagination and loved to read so I had no shortage of ideas for stories I could tell myself as I played with my toys and dolls. I wanted to be a teacher, so I spent a lot of time pretending to be a teacher, and I very often played 'school' with one of my best friends. We would take turns being the teacher and student.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I could really use some more enthusiasm these days. I'm having a hard time staying motivated to get much done and even my plan to go for a walk first thing in the morning has fallen by the wayside since it's still dark when my husband leaves for work. And it's been cold! Hopefully now that it's warming again I will get a little bit of gumption back and get out for walks. I should put a little energy into looking for a part time job as well. I have found a Sweet Adelines chorus I'm going to join so I have music to learn and at least one thing to add to my calendar every week so that should help me feel a bit less gloomy and alone. There won't be any goofing off as I get up to speed on all the music, but the performing will involve enthusiasm and a bit of the pretending skill I used to have!

Are you taking some time to goof off today? Leave a comment and let me know!

"This, then, is how you should pray:

'Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.'"

Five Minute Friday - Story

This post may contain affiliate links - using affiliate links from A Fresh Cup of Coffee helps continue the coffee breaks and conversation.

One word. Five minutes to write about it. This is the idea behind Five Minute Friday and this is today's free-writing post.

********************

what's your story?
every picture tells a story

********************

Everyone has a story. We know this when we stop to think about it, but maybe I'm not the only one who doesn't think about it as I go about my day-to-day. I've been thinking about it more recently because I realized that I don't know other people's stories any more than they know mine.

We've been living here for a few months, and have found a church that we like and attend regularly. We're not members yet, and are still getting to know the people and activities. We're learning names and matching them with faces. People are trying to learn our names as well, but of course the opportunities for conversation are limited as we're coming and going from services.

Was it last Sunday or the week before? Anyway, as we were walking out to the car, I said to my husband, "I am irrelevant." I think I took him by surprise, but I explained, "No one knows anything about me except my name and that we're new here. I don't work outside the home, and nobody knows what I used to do, my hobbies, my skills, or enough about my background or what I care about, so they have no starting point for a conversation." I had noticed that after a generic greeting and comment about the weather or whatever, people would ask my husband about something to do with his job because they know where he works. And from that point on, I have nothing to contribute. Please understand, I am not faulting anyone! It is just a hazard of the circumstance at this time. I do not believe myself to be worthless or uninteresting―I just realized that no one knows my story! They barely know anything about the current chapter! And since I'd probably be considered very odd if I walked up to people and blurted out, "I'm Kym and I have four kids that I homeschooled," it's a slow process. The couple of people with whom we've exchanged a few stories on Wednesday nights have sometimes introduced us to others with a teaser about our story, and that helps get new conversations and story-telling started.

Inside each of us is a natural born storyteller, waiting to be released. ~Robin Moore, author

Here's a related story about knowing others' stories―My husband and I reflect sometimes on the huge difference in how mobile I am now compared to before I had my knee replacement. We both remember how difficult just walking through a grocery store was a year ago, that I needed a cane all the time, and that I had an obvious limp and was in almost constant pain. Today I'm cane-free, and comparatively pain-free. I seldom limp, and for the most part I am back to being a fast walker. But steps and uneven ground still slow me down, and I don't always walk at the speed I'd like. Nobody else knows though. Nobody can tell just by looking at me that it's been less than a year since I was crippled. They just see me taking the stairs "too slowly" or struggling to step in or out of a car. Are they impatient? Maybe. And maybe they wouldn't be if they knew my story.

We are all storytellers. We all live in a network of stories. There isn't a stronger connection between people than storytelling. ~Jimmy Neil Smith, Director of the International Storytelling Center

What about me? Am I impatient or judgey about someone else who is doing something differently from what I'd expect? Someone who seems to be anxious or nervous or uncomfortable? Someone who gives a snippy answer or someone who ignores a question? I need to remember that I don't know their story. I don't know the road they traveled before today, what experiences of joy or sorrow have shaped their story. I don't know what hurts and fears are part of their backstory, what scars are hidden from view, or how far they've come to arrive here.

Let's all take the time to hear and to tell our stories and consider how the stories shape who we are. And how Jesus can redeem every story and write his mercy and love into each chapter.

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.
Let the redeemed of the LORD tell their story―
those he redeemed from the hand of the foe,
those he gathered from the lands,
from east and west, from north and south.
Some wandered in desert wastelands,
finding no way to a city where they could settle.
They were hungry and thirsty,
and their lives ebbed away.
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble,
and he delivered them from their distress.
He led them by a straight way to a city where they could settle.
Let them give thanks to the LORD
for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind,
for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.
. . .
Let the one who is wise heed these things
and ponder the loving deeds of the LORD.
~Psalm 107:1-9, 43~

Everyday Images #4

This post may contain affiliate links - using affiliate links from A Fresh Cup of Coffee helps continue the coffee breaks and conversation.

Welcome to my another installment of my challenge and reminder to myself to take photos somewhat regularly. I went through past photo challenges and came up with a list of prompts at the beginning of the year and am trying to find opportunities to take pictures of these things each week. These were the prompts I assigned myself for the past couple weeks:

March Prompts - Everyday Images #4
~~~~~
same spot (monthly)
plant (quarterly)
collection
workspace (quarterly)
zigzag
front and back
~~~~~

same spot (monthly) - added some pictures on the wall and a bit of spring decor to the table.

plant (quarterly) - I am not very good with plants, so I'm taking a chance that this begonia will remain alive for the remaining three quarters!

collection - The only collections I brought with me are my China and some selected books.

workspace (quarterly) - Not working outside of the house right now, so this is where the magic happens! Haha!

zigzag - Although this exhibit outside the Columbus Museum of Art is curvy, I think it's still a zigzag type shape, and it's the best I could come up with!

front and back - As uncomfortable as I am with selfies, it seemed the only way I could show the front and back of the St Louis Blues shirt I wore to the game on Saturday night.

And a few bonus photos:

We spent Sunday afternoon at the Columbus Museum of Art. I'm planning to share more photos from the museum on Homeschool Coffee Break soon.

I am sharing my photos every other Tuesday, along with my prompts for the next two weeks. You can use all or some of the prompts for your own photo posts, or none of the prompts and just link up a post featuring your photos. Simple rules: Your posts must be family-friendly; the photos must be your own; and the post must be mostly photos. If you do share I'd appreciate a mention and link to A Fresh Cup of Coffee on your post.
