One of the things I don't like about summer (there are only a few) is the bugs. Well, insects in general. Flies getting in the house, a nice evening outside but then the mosquitoes or other biting bugs try to ruin it, those annoying little gnats, yellow jackets and sweat bees trying to get in your drinks. And stinkbugs, am I right? Horrible things!
I can appreciate some insects though. Butterflies and honeybees, obviously! I love fireflies (when they stay outside) and I enjoy the sound of crickets, cicadas, and katydids (again, when they stay outside). The Sunday Stills Animal of the Month theme is "Summer Bugs" so here are some bugs I found interesting enough to photograph. I'm afraid none of these are true bugs - just insects and a few creepy crawly creatures that most of would call 'bugs'
This is a False Potato Bug. Closest thing to a true bug you will find in this post.
Honeybees at work:
At our place in Maryland, we found praying mantises on the side porch almost every year.
I feel like butterflies deserve their own post, so I will limit myself to just the photo of the lowly caterpillar today. A Monarch butterfly caterpillar, specifically.
These are examples of the kinds of bugs I'm okay with - David Rogers' "Big Bugs" art exhibit. It's currently at Franklin Park Conservatory, but we saw it a couple years ago at the Dawes Arboretum.

Wow, excellent shots of the buggies, Kym! I left out a lot of mantis images because well, I have a lot! Last year we had a tone of meat bees (yellow jackets) this year, very few! I love that arboretum with those insect/spider sculptures! Awesome!
ReplyDeleteI chose to leave out butterfly shots because I have so many, how would I choose? I have noticed we don't see many stinkbugs around any more, and I am very glad! Those things are awful, so I'm glad their numbers seem to be more under control. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

ReplyDeleteNot big on bugs here and I do not hesitate to smash them on sight. Killed a roach the other night before going to bed. Fortunately, I see a roach only about 1x a year. We pay big $$ to keep the insect world out of the house. Every once in a while one will sneak in, but he never survives!

Keeping bugs out of my house is a high priority for me too! When I see them I'm often frozen between whether it's worse that squash them and have bug guts or leave them alone and know they are STILL in my house. Gah. A flyswatter is a very useful tool.
