The Ash Wednesday Hodgepodge

A hodgepodge is a jumble or assortment of things that might not appear to belong together. Joyce at From This Side of the Pond hosts a weekly link-up called Wednesday Hodgepodge that is a little collection of questions for bloggers to answer just for fun and to get to know each other. I always look forward to chatting with friends over coffee, so pour a cup of your favorite and let's visit for a few minutes!

Here are this week's questions - and my answers - for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1.  The Hodgepodge lands on Ash Wednesday, which is the first day of Lent. Do you mark this season in some way? Will you be giving something up or adding something to your life in this Lenten season?

We spend time in reflection, reading and meditating on Scripture, preparing for Passover/Resurrection Day, but don't formally participate in additional Lenten season services. I am giving up some foods, but not because of Lent. The timing just happened to be coincidental.

2. Pancakes . . . are you a fan? Syrup or no syrup? Plain, blueberries, chocolate chips, bananas, or some other add in? Are pancakes on your menu this week?

I do like pancakes, but hardly ever make them! I occasionally have pancakes if we go out for breakfast, but I'm more likely to choose French toast or waffles. Syrup, always! Real maple syrup or a fruit syrup are my favorites. Generally I choose pancakes plain though I'm certainly not opposed to chocolate chips or fruit added! No pancakes on our menu this week, unless we go out for breakfast on Saturday and I go for pancakes. And I kind of doubt that will happen.

I didn't even got paczki this year. 😞 I should have added paczki as an alias for donuts in the Fasnacht Day article at my homeschool blog

3. Tell us about a time recently when you felt 'spread too thin.'

The time that comes to mind goes back quite a few months, during the lead-up to the SVC show in the fall. Towards the end of summer I was feeling the deadline for all those tasks looming, and I wound up taking responsibility for several tasks I hadn't planned on and wasn't confident in, and was fitting all of that in around work and vacation and family plans. I'm sure I've been 'spread thin' since then, but that stands out.

4.  What's your favorite jewel or gemstone? In terms of your wardrobe would we find more gem tones, pastels, black and white, or primary colors?

I don't own any, but I'd say sapphires are my favorite. My wardrobe . . . definitely NOT pastels. I have hardly any of those! I do have a lot of black and white, and blues.

5.  What responsibility do you think is hardest about being in charge?

The most uncomfortable part of being in charge, for me, is having to get after other people to complete their tasks. So if I'm chairing a committee or in charge of some kind of work group, I can figure out delegating tasks, but I find it very hard to bug the people under me if they don't follow through or if they don't do their jobs properly. I just hope that everyone does what they signed up for!

6. Insert your own random thought here.

We started planning our family get-together vacation during the really cold snap recently. Perfect time to think about summer vacation destinations! Thought we finally had everyone on board with some ideas, but I just had a couple of other things occur to me as possibilities. And a possible monkey-wrench or two as well. So that's still in the drawing board stage.

I suspect I might wind up feeling 'spread thin' over the next couple weeks. I got summoned for jury duty the first week of March so that could be interesting. That might wind up being a really crazy week, or it might be a bit of a break depending on whether I'm put on a case or not.

Tell me about your pancake preferences or how you'd answer any of these questions! Leave a comment and let me know!

Simple Meal Planning - Plan to Eat

  1. We went out for pancakes on Valentine's Day as I prefer going out to breakfast vs dinner on that day. I hardly ever make them at home...sometime in summer when we have local fresh blueberries.
    I enjoyed your answers!!

  2. I'm sure it's super rewarding to travel/vacation with family but it probably has numerous challenges as well in terms of getting everyone to agree on where to go, when, etc. But like I said, I'm sure it's worth it. My husband just dodged a jury duty bullet. He's in business for himself and doesn't make money unless he works. Jury duty would have been like a "vacation day" for him (he takes very few "vacation days") except that... he wouldn't have been on vacation... Good luck with yours if you get called up to serve...

    1. Yes, we love getting everyone together for at least a few days at a vacation home, but the logistics can be challenging. Guess I should pitch my new possibility to the gang and see what they think.
We'll see what happens with the jury duty. This is the fourth time I've been called, but the first two times were before I was a citizen, and the most recent time court wound up cancelled for the entire week anyway because of weather.

  4. Hi,
Paczki ... geez I do not run into many folks that know what they are. ;-)
    FUN that you do!
I like our very own maple syrup on my pancakes, and we make buttermilk pancakes.

    1. When I lived in Maryland I got used to calling them fasnachts which not many folks outside of that area of the country are familiar with. I think it's fun that there are so many regionalisms and different names for donuts.
Homemade maple syrup would be wonderful! Lucky you!

  5. We had pancakes last night but the way you described them, I could just eat them again!
It sounds like such a busy time in the run up to the lead-up to the SVC show.
Ahh! A cold snap is a great time to plan a summer vacation! I hope the jury duty goes well.

  6. Getting ready for performances are such busy busy times with lots of hours involved. I'm sure there was satisfaction when the event went off well. Hope the summer vacation plans come together well with no snafus! Blessings.

    1. It was a relief once the event was finished! I don't think I want to be "in charge" of an event like that again though, I'll just help out.
Hopefully we get some summer vacation plans nailed down soon!

  7. French toast? Waffles? Or pancakes? Oh those are impossible choices. It is honestly why I usually choose an omelet! (I think my favorite would be....waffles. But I love the all!) Breakfast carbs for the win:)

  8. We did a family beach trip last year and just landing on a date everyone could make was a huge challenge. Worth it, but not easy. I haven't made or eaten pancakes in quite some time, but after reading today's hodgepodge I'm kind of wanting a bite or two. Hubs and I might have to go out to breakfast so he can order them and share : ) Have a great day!

  9. Hello, Kym!! As far as pancakes go, I love them. I do cook them here and there. I prefer waffles and french toast but I love all of them to be honest. I also like regular syrup for pancakes, waffles and french toast BUT I also will include fruits and whip cream of french toast. We call it a loaded french toast or stuffed!

  10. I don't like maple syrup but I do like other types of syrup; I just had some cinnamon bun pancakes with sweetened cream cheese syrup. They were amazing. I like all the breakfast carbs too and often pick something sweet in place of eggs when we eat out since I make eggs often at home and rarely bother with waffles or pancakes. Best of luck with Jury Duty and your family vacation.

  11. I enjoyed your answers!! Just last night, we booked a condo at the beach for a family vacation. I hope it works where everyone can come! It is so hard to plan once everyone has their own lives and activities.

  12. When the kids were little, we would have pancakes every Saturday morning. Now that it's just my husband and I, we only have them occasionally or when we have guests.

  13. Sure enjoyed reading your responses. I am a big fan of pancakes. But won't turn down French toast, either!! We have become regulars at our neighborhood iHop - can't beat their $6 breakfasts!!
Hope if you do get selected for a jury, you will find it an interesting diversion for a few days. I was on a jury in the fall for a murder case which was difficult but also eye-opening.
